B5>DS9

And Razorfist is a faggot whose opinion should always be ignored.

He says in the video that B5 is a great show that shouldn't have its discussions eternally dragged down by constantly being compared to DS9.

I saw it more as Razorfist defending DS9.

'If it was a copy then we'd be the bad guys for liking it, but it's okay because it like totally wasn't cribbed from B5'.

That's why it's so important that it for-real guys wasn't stealing from B5. The DS9 fans have their ego invested in it.

Season 5 of B5 was meh. I like some of the telepath stuff but really, it was mostly boring. Season 3&4 were peak shit.

That's because the network told them that S4 would be the last, so they crammed everything planned for S5 into S4 and then the network turned around and said you can have S5 after all.

Made it about half way through B5 before they took it off Amazon and I found it pretty enjoyable. After hearing for years from nerds about how much DS9 ripped it off I gave it a shot and aside from taking place on a space station and some of the mild prophetic/supernatural elements I found them both very different. Maybe the debate was more heated in the 90s when both were on TV at the same time?

  • Female second in command.
  • Defiant/White Star
  • Massive wars, with the space stations acting as fulcrums.
  • Space stations near 'worm holes' or transit routes
  • etc.

I thought B5 was an MGM show. Why'd they take it off Amazon?

I don’t know, I think it was some wierd rights thing because it was brought back like two weeks later. Iirc you could still buy the episodes/seasons. Maybe I’ll get back into it.

I watched it earlier. I like both series, I think Razor proves there was no stealing.

Razorfist didn't prove shit.

His main point is DS9 originally wasn't originally going to be like Babylon 5 so they couldn't have stolen anything. But if anything that's evidence in favor of them copying; they changed what they were doing to be more like their competitor as production loomed and as they had more opportunities to hear about their plans.

Second point is some DS9 principals worked at different companies at the time so they wouldn't have helped a competitor, but personal and backroom stuff happens all the time in Hollywood. That just means the companies didn't officially have a policy of stealing B5 ideas, which is like saying water is wet; nobody thinks DS9 writers got a corporate letter saying "just copy B5".

Ultimately B5 came first and DS9 has many things in common with it, so DS9 is the copy - whether intentional or not.

Firstly Babylon 5 is a big pile of shit, and secondly - it came before DS9.

You probably didn't get through the first season, did you? You need to suffer through the first, in order to get to the three succeeding seasons. At the fifth it drops off again.

Yeah, people have said the same about Picard season 3.

Sorry, but if you can't hit the ground on the first or second - why should I bother?

They replaced the lead actor, modified another lead, introduced a more serialized story structure (the format that was later copied by HBO and subsequently everyone else), everything got more darker, more major characters experienced significant changes.

The later seasons are basically 'The Lord Of The Rings' in space meets 'Space Above And Beyond', or 'House of Cards'.

The acting is still hammy, at times, but it had improved.

Because sometimes you have to build the world and lore to establish the series.

B5 is a little special in that regard. The lead of S1 had to leave because of schizophrenia. Straczynski essentially retooled the whole series afterward. New lead with a new tone.

Then S5 is shit because they were expecting to be done after S4. Rushed the ending of S4 to wrap up all the point points and then had to pull another season out of his ass. Lost actors to contract stuff, etc.

That said, I personally think B5 is overhyped. I really like a lot of the characters, but the pacing was a mess and you could feel the production issues Then again, he was trying to do serialized TV in an episodic genre in the early 90s. It's great for what it was, when it was.

  • The plagiarism accusation is largely unfounded and contradicted by multiple lines of evidence, including timelines, production records, interviews, and regulatory context.
  • Many similarities between DS9 and Babylon 5 are either coincidental, stem from common sci-fi tropes, or predate both shows.
  • Babylon 5 and DS9 stand as distinct, influential sci-fi series that contributed uniquely to television storytelling and genre evolution.
  • The video’s narrator advocates for appreciating Babylon 5 on its own merits without relying on defamatory plagiarism claims.
  • The DS9-Babylon 5 rivalry is a product of fan speculation and misinformation, rather than documented fact.

Except that Hollywoke has a history of launching competing shows and movies in the same time frame as competing products. Take the recent spate of 'Frankenstein' inspired movies. Surely a coincidence, right? (lol)

All the Frankenstein or old school movie monster stuff comes from either WB or Universal. And them because they have to keep up the rights.

Even stupid comedies like Renfield (Universal) is from one of these two. Mostly universal because they own most of that stuff

I don’t care if it was stolen but I’m glad it wasn’t picked up by Paramount. Best case, it would have probably been canceled after the first season. Worst case, we’d see the equivalent of a very fag-ified series similar to STD, Piss-Card, or Star Trek High school.
