You probably didn't get through the first season, did you? You need to suffer through the first, in order to get to the three succeeding seasons. At the fifth it drops off again.
They replaced the lead actor, modified another lead, introduced a more serialized story structure (the format that was later copied by HBO and subsequently everyone else), everything got more darker, more major characters experienced significant changes.
The later seasons are basically 'The Lord Of The Rings' in space meets 'Space Above And Beyond', or 'House of Cards'.
The acting is still hammy, at times, but it had improved.
B5 is a little special in that regard. The lead of S1 had to leave because of schizophrenia. Straczynski essentially retooled the whole series afterward. New lead with a new tone.
Then S5 is shit because they were expecting to be done after S4. Rushed the ending of S4 to wrap up all the point points and then had to pull another season out of his ass. Lost actors to contract stuff, etc.
That said, I personally think B5 is overhyped. I really like a lot of the characters, but the pacing was a mess and you could feel the production issues Then again, he was trying to do serialized TV in an episodic genre in the early 90s. It's great for what it was, when it was.
Firstly Babylon 5 is a big pile of shit, and secondly - it came before DS9.
How dare you!
Easy Greta, just saying it how it is :p

Yeah, people have said the same about Picard season 3.
Sorry, but if you can't hit the ground on the first or second - why should I bother?

Because sometimes you have to build the world and lore to establish the series.
