Unfortunately the threat environment of the modern internet has made reverse proxies like cloudflare effectively mandatory. Just for DDoS protection you need the biggest scale possible which is going to drive the monopoly all on its own, without even considering the usual scaling and network effects.
Some have theorized that the situation has been allowed to deteriorate intentionally, to drive more people to cloudflare where they can middle-man all encrypted traffic.
We're so far past "don't use cloudflare" that it's not even funny. We'd have to re-engineer the internet starting with packet routing, the entire stack. We'd have to clear out every intelligence agency. Thousands would have to die - I wish I was joking.
The farms and other place have their version of ddos protection

All the insecure internet enable devices aren't helping either.
Yeah, Kiwifarms has something called Kiwiflare. It makes your device solve a crypto challenge and that prevents DDoSing somehow, or something like that.
I run a business and at this point I'm only accepting in-person resumes or recommendations through linked-in. Any time I've posted an ad on Indeed, almost all the applications I get are jeets who are totally unqualified for the job and have no experience in the field. Most of them aren't even in the country: they just apply hoping it gets them an interview and they can use it for a PR application. It gets to be a chore to filter through them to find the few applications from people who actually live in the same city as the business.

This just makes me miss internet 1.0
When it corporatized heavily with 2.0, it was never the same. And it's only gotten worse, more consolidated, and less fun.

What's the "other place"?
4chan?
I think we're finally past Eternal September. I think we might actually be approaching the Fall and the cold Winter of the internet.
Indeed as well. Not helpful when you're looking for work. Although I swear indeed applications go straight into the recycle bin.
