Just for DDoS protection you need the biggest scale possible which is going to drive the monopoly all on its own, without even considering the usual scaling and network effects.

We're so far past "don't use cloudflare" that it's not even funny. We'd have to re-engineer the internet starting with packet routing, the entire stack. We'd have to clear out every intelligence agency. Thousands would have to die - I wish I was joking.

When it corporatized heavily with 2.0, it was never the same. And it's only gotten worse, more consolidated, and less fun.
