A solid portion of Redditors are old enough to predate Obama's Cash for Clunkers program that made personal vehicles impossibly expensive for most people.
The program gave people incentive to sell their old vehicles to the government, as opposed to selling them into the used car market.
The government then turned around and destroyed all said old vehicles.
Said old vehicles are now no longer in the market, meaning supply has dried up, so prices go up to compensate.
The used car market in American has basically gone bug-fuck insane as a result. Last I checked, I could stand a good chance at selling my current car at or above what I paid for it. That's not normal.
Not to say anything about the program, but I have to point out that used car prices have exploded since 2019 here as well. I was looking for one then, and if I had bought it, I probably could sell it for (about) the same price now.
As if Redditors could ever afford a personal vehicle, lol.

That’s where they gave you a 10k check and they took your car and destroyed it right?
You'd be lucky to get 5k, and most of the time that was in vouchers for buying new "more eco friendly" cars instead of raw cash.
And yeah, by their own admission nearly 700000 cars were outright destroyed within the few year lifetime of the program.
It was supposed to be Obama's quid pro quo to US automakers. Ironic that the bestselling car was the Toyota Corolla.
I can't quite follow the logical chain from "cash for clunkers" to "making personal vehicles impossible expensive for most people".
Because you’re fucking dumb lol
Who got me the upgrade from 'retarded' to merely 'fucking dumb lol'?

Worse, everything post-2012 has all kinds of GPS and tracking software in it. Muh convenience!
