Just a well made movie imo.
I have no idea what to write as a review. If you liked the first one you’ll probably like this too. Nothing super gay or woke imo, just some excellent characters in interesting situations. A couple audible “what the fuck am I watching” were elicited.
Im looking forward to the sequels, in spite of the announced director for the next one (though I’ve not seen anything she’s made, she did make the Marvels…)
This may be a me problem, but I'm kinda tired of the mutant varieties in zombie media. And yes I know they are not zombies, but they perform the same function. Like the different walkers in 'The Walking Dead'. In this movie we get slug people and big-dick super chuds.
All these movies will use verbiage like; evolving, mutating, what have you. Which is a generational process. It's just silly.
The 'Boots' trailer was one of the best trailers I've ever seen. That version of 'Boots' by Taylor Homes is quite unsettling, give it a listen on your streamer of choice.
When I first heard about “mutant” zombies, in the pre-release buzz, I thought it sounded retarded. When I saw the first “mutant” zombies in the movie i thought it was a bad sign for the rest of the movie. But, looking at things more holistically I enjoyed it for two main reasons:
-The first movie already turned the image of the stereotypical zombie on its head by inventing zombies that sprint like Ethiopians chasing a gazelle. A decade or two later it’s easy to forget how revolutionary that was.
-Further to the last point, these never were zombies in the first place. They’ve never been the immortal, re-animated dead. They’ve always just been sick humans, we even saw them starving to death at the end of Days
It’s kind of one of the core themes of the movie : (Spoilers)

The dad tells the son “Thet have no mind. They have no soul.” when trying to get him acclimated to killing them without remorse (“the more you do it the easier it gets.”). Then in the next act, we see almost the exact opposite, the scene with the mother in the train. The doctor says he builds his tower with the bones of human and infected alike, “because they are alike.”
Not to say you didn’t get that about the film, just that in that light I don’t have as much issue with their approach as I thought I was going to. There’s also two more movies to see how they “evolve” (heh, sorry) this plot line
It was definitely quite a “video-gamey” choice, making the universe more like Resident Evil or The Last of Us than the classic Romero take.
First ballot hall of fame trailer, that one. It was bittersweet, though; there was just no way the movie was ever going to live up to that trailer.
Wait, Boyle isn’t directing the sequels??
Hes coming back for the 3rd one, but this lady Nia DaCosta is doing the 2nd one
It seems he's fairly involved so it’s (hopefully) not going to be a repeat of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, aka vision-less slop
Women can't direct movies, even Angelina Jolie who has the creds couldnt do it.
Kathryn Bigelow is a good director. She makes a lot of dude-centric movies though. Maybe she's a unicorn
First film she everade was Hurt Locker and I hated it, I thought the writing was trash. Them there was Zero Dark Thirty which made a woman a hero. What else is there?
Zero Dark Thirty was a travesty.
Jessica Chastain as a CIA maverick girlboss.
And the entire story of how they caught OBL was completely fictionalized along with her character.
That's not her first film.
Point Break, Near Dark, Strange Days, Blue Steel, K-19
Think again.
Isn’t she absolutely terrible?
Oh right, she’s a diversity hire.
I'm about halfway through and would put it between okay and good, probably closer to okay. I thought the opening scene was quite weak, some of the audio compression is really strange, and some of the camera work is a bit too over-the-top/hamfisted and fourth-wall breaking. Otherwise, I do enjoy the circumstances and the two main characters. Their story seems to carry the film. Again, I'm only halfway through. I generally don't like the lead actor but I like him in this.
I’ll echo some of your sentiments, indeed the camera work during the action scenes can be a bit jarring - it sometimes feels like a “kill-cam” in a video game, and the main thing it felt like this movie was missing (to me) was the fantastic music/sound design of the first one. The sound design holds up pretty well but boy was I missing the score (mainly the piano) from Days.
The world opens up quite a bit as the movie progresses. I hope you share your thoughts when you’re done! I was also impressed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s acting (frankly all the characters are well acted!).
Forgive the tangent (ignore it if you want! lol) but do you often not watch a whole movie in one sitting? I feel like that would get in the way of the experience!
Eeeeeh... I disagree. 28 Years Later is quite different from 28 Days and even 28 Weeks. If you go into it expecting a movie similar to the first two movies you're going to be disappointed. Although 28 Years isn't bad. It's just not really a sequel. More of a reboot or re-imagining.
28 Days Later was good. 28 weeks later was really gay. So I hope this is good again.
In Days the "social commentary" was mostly pretty subtle. Often more for laughs than "education of the audience" which no one wants to pay for. In Weeks it was more 'in your face' & less funny :/ but tolerable.
Plus other issues. Days > Weeks by a pretty wide margin, imho.
You know what ill say?
Fuck characters in zombie movies. Or monster movies. Or disaster movies.
I just want to see the chaos. I am here to see people run from dinosaurs and to see monsters attacking and badass squads holding the trigger and mowing down a line of undead.
Im just here for the action. I want the Hard-core Henry version of a zombie movie where it's just balls to the wall like the peak 5 minutes of World War Z was and forget the family and the cure and the bullshit. I want to see shit getting fucked up.
This is a general rant and not related to your specific review.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.
Just watch it. Its more like an anime, you will see what I mean after.
That's a fact! The 'monster' is the real star of this genre of movies. The first film focused more on that than the 2nd did, which explains (to me) why one was good and the other 'ok'.
Like the American attempts to re-make Godzilla films (meh at best) vs Godzilla Zero (really good!).
Stay true to the genre, that's what people come to see. Don't try mixing in 'new stuff' unless that stuff is great OR you're super-talented at making films. Neither is likely as both are pretty rare, eh?
Just watched it, aside from some of the shot camera work, the story was very...anime like. I won't spoil it bit it had that vibe and emotion to it.
Thanks. Will check it out when I get a chance
28 Days Later was released in 2002. Shot for $8M it made good money! It was a decent movie, nothing amazing but still fun to watch.
28 Weeks Later was released in 2007. Shot for $17M it made a little less than Days did. It was ok, had some good moments but also some really dumb stuff too.
Plans for 28 Months Later fell into 'development hell' and morphed into 28 Years Later, some 23 years after the original! Shot for $60M (inflation, eh? 🤭) It's doing well on the box office.
It is the start of a new trilogy. Sounds entertaining enough, following the first movie's chaotic story more than the second's less chaotic one. Probably.
I dunno. 28 days later was crypto j, anti-white bullshit. Don't see why the sequels would be any better.
Are you saying that for any reason other than having watched the Wyatt Stagg video?
I don’t think there was a single non-white character in this movie, unless you count one middle eastern looking zombie
