“I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO..."
CYA speak for "HBO fired me for my incompetence." This guy was doing everything he could to jump from games to work full time in Hollywood. There is no way in hell he would ever choose to walk that back. I would love to have been a fly on the wall when this all went down.
Druckman is losing his fucking mind over this. I guarantee it.
Too late dipshit, the damage has already been done. You killed Joel again, even after being given historical precedent as to why that wasn't going to work, especially not with Pedo Pascal's present popularity.
Someone should have told him normies are less forgiving of character deaths than gamers are. Most of them only consume their slop because of the star actors involved, and when those stars are removed, they lose interest. I have no idea what the hell people see in Pedro Pascal (then again, I don't know what anyone sees in most A-listers), but he was carrying the show regardless. And now that he's gone, all that's left is Potato Face and its oaken acting ability.
Plus the Pascal fangirls have had it happen to them twice now with their fanfic dream chars, GoT being the first. They were never the most stable in the first place, but after getting their wet dreams crushed twice now they're about ready to snap.
Even if killing Joel had been well received when the game did it, were I running things, I would still check if we could go in a different direction with the show, knowing that the weight would fall on the absolute mess that was somehow cast as Ellie. I can’t imagine being a writer and having any idea how TLOU2 went over, and looking at making Bella Ramsey the undisputed focal point and still going for it.
He would likely give away just how bad he is at storytelling if he went ahead since the show is probably out of game material to adapt, and just like happened with D&D writing the end of Game of Thrones the complete lack of skill would be career ending.
About a year ago, he said he was winding down on game development, largely to focus more on working for Hollywood. Now he says he's stepping back from him film work to focus on Naughty Dog. Pretty clear the film career he was gunning for wasn't panning out and now he has to come crawling back to his old haunt. Wouldn't be surprised if HBO themselves told him to take a hike after TLoU's complete ratings collapse.
I dunno. It seems everyone at HBO thought the potato head had enough star power to carry the show without Pedro Pascal, all because she played some side character towards the end of Game of Thrones that people sort of liked for one episode.
Doubt any of them pay attention to nerd shit like video games. Not when they're busy making "high art" TV shows where they see how much blood, boobs, and nihilism they can cram into ten hour-long episodes every year. And any who do know about video games just dismissed the backlash as the typical "toxic, white, cis, far-right, Nazi, Trump-voting, Tate-worshipping, Hamburglar-supporting manbabies screeching."

The show shit the bed while they were actively adapting his existing material. This is not a game of thrones situation. TLOU2 was just bad.

Friendly reminder that this is the guy who's being cucked by a troon.
I mean druckmann is a faggot, but are we acting like that tweet is real? Even before I saw the community note it was obviously someone trolling
I like that the community note leads off with “Surprisingly.”
In other words HBO told him to fuck off.
He should step back creatively off the edge of a skyscraper
He indeed deserves to go up in the corporate world. Up, up, up, up!
Now he is gonna full time work on that game with that ugly, mongrel, dyke, shaved head character.
Pretty sure its a game that sony will prop up and out in bundles.
they gonna do a synagogue episode?
Did someone ask to damage the synagogue?
What did everyone involved expect?

Didnt anyone at HBO know about the game beforehand?
Did they not know that once the Joel killing episode came out it would be over?

Neil Druckmann to the studio
AKA “fired.”
