Someone should have told him normies are less forgiving of character deaths than gamers are. Most of them only consume their slop because of the star actors involved, and when those stars are removed, they lose interest. I have no idea what the hell people see in Pedro Pascal (then again, I don't know what anyone sees in most A-listers), but he was carrying the show regardless. And now that he's gone, all that's left is Potato Face and its oaken acting ability.
Plus the Pascal fangirls have had it happen to them twice now with their fanfic dream chars, GoT being the first. They were never the most stable in the first place, but after getting their wet dreams crushed twice now they're about ready to snap.
Even if killing Joel had been well received when the game did it, were I running things, I would still check if we could go in a different direction with the show, knowing that the weight would fall on the absolute mess that was somehow cast as Ellie. I can’t imagine being a writer and having any idea how TLOU2 went over, and looking at making Bella Ramsey the undisputed focal point and still going for it.
