Adapting the unique concept instead of the story itself is always a method on the table, most companies just only adapt to use the IP as marketing to lure fans in and it would preclude that option.
I'd much rather they choose that instead in nearly all cases.
Wasn't the original also something like a decade in the works? I think that was one of the last movies I saw in a theater. It was surprisingly good enough to even forget about how goofy the CGI looked at first.
It's not that bad (if you don't think of it as a Fist of the North Star movie, much like the Super Mario Bros., movie is cool as a cyberpunk sci-fi film if you just discount it having anything to do with Super Mario).
Gary Daniels is legitimate, and the fight scenes -- especially where he fights like 30 guys in one room -- aren't bad, mainly because all of the goons/thugs were his students so they were able to churn out the fight sequences relatively quickly (similar to how Seagal used to pump out pretty violent fight scenes on super low budgets since they were all his students), instead of it taking days/weeks like on most Hollywood productions.
Alita: Battle Angel is the only good Western live-action adaptation of a manga/anime that there will ever be.
I hope that Evangelion movie they've been trying to make for about 25 years NEVER gets made.
Edge of Tomorrow was rather good if you count light novels, though that one was more of a general adaptation than a direct one.
It was nothing like the original so it cant be a good adaptation

Apparently there's a sequel planned, although it's been planned/delayed for ages, sounds like.
Also, it's now even more Current Year than it was back then, so the sequel might suck...but I'm still excited we might get even more good Alita.

Yes, it took James Cameron--a big fan of the manga--about 20 years to get that movie greenlit and made.
It's also probably the LAST good James Cameron movie.
Cameron didn't direct though, did he? I thought Robert Rodriguez had something to do with it? Or am I thinking of something else?
Or were both of them producers on it?
Rodriguez is hit or miss, but he's at least passionate about what he works on (assuming he worked on it).
What, you don't love the 1995 version of First of the North Star?

Reminds me of the guyver american tv film. By syfy i think?
Wow, I've never heard of this one. This looks awful.
Could've been something with the proper presentation...but no one cared for that 30 years ago.

Alita was a leper-fest. Stop pretending.
