You are ignoring having principles and your own standards not guided by current trends. It's not just an issue of education, but of morality. You are right, those normal productive people, especially liberals, often don't have any such principles, or they bend based on circumstance. Your example sounds reasonable but if someone understands American liberty, and personal choice over what goes into our bodies to be among our most cherished rights - which theoretically he should as a politician - he would not say screw your freedoms. But he holds no such principles, or possibly a scarier thought is that he holds more important counter-principles.
