Under French rule, that island was known as the jewel of the Caribbean. It probably could be again, but would need to be cleared first.

If you cleaned it up. Starting capital is needed but Its perfectly situated for maritime industry, shipping, fishing then theres rubber, sugar etc. Even tourism if the country gets cleaned up and civilized. The inhabitants are the only issue.
im not the brightest lot but given ample seawater access it could also be turned into the worlds largest water purification plant with a side of salt harvesting. further uses would be hydrogen and oxygen production and perhaps a spaceport/missile location. the potable water would be a valuble trade good on its own.
farming side of things perhaps marine plants could be grown there too? there's been some success in farming kelp and seaweed. if that can get off the ground industrial fish farms could be built or the stuff can be converted into plastic and biofuel products... perhaps even eaten as produce once its been made more palatable.
the ocean current itself could even be a potental resource, tidal power can be feasable there.
But there is plenty of access to raw seawater elsewhere, and why would you want the world's largest water purification plant on an island fairly far away from a continent?
You could make it an amazing tax haven and gambling mecca. Though you would need to have an iron rule.
