Games Journos are so bad they spent their entire existence as a laughing stock. From being obvious shills, to being Playboy but with Lara Croft, to being really bad at games, to being Leftist political pieces.
Unlike every other media industry they never developed a historical competence to fall back on, that people could point to and say "well they used to do really good work, this is just a misstep." Which meant they couldn't ever shake that bought and sold stigma.
Heck without having Google in their pocket and abusing algorithms, even the most mainstream like IGN wouldn't be able to influence anyone.
At this point, I think it's even spread to outside trump supporters.
In fact, I think it also lead to a general distaste for Journalists as a whole, with them all being seen as one of the lowest of professions in the modern era.
