Hey, with all the tables DOGE has been turning over lately, what do you think the odds are the next agency they turn their attention to tries to lock them out of the servers?

By that I mean changing all the passwords and refusing to disclose them in a desperate gamble to 'win.'

No point, Trump and Elon have weaponised autism on their side.

We're dealing with a vampiric boomer establishment that refuses to hand over power to the next generations like they were supposed to, they stand ZERO chance of being technologically savy enough to lock out young autists that can get presidential permissions and pardons..

The government doesn't use usernames and passwords. At least the parts of it that know what they are doing. It's all PKI.

Regardless, if anyone gets in their way, they will be fired. And then their replacement can give Elon access.

@.@ I'm afraid you've lost me...PKI?

Public Key Infrastructure. It uses a physical card that the user inserts into a card reader, and then they enter a PIN that is associated with the card. Any access within the system is controlled by granting access to a specific user account through Active Directory etc.

There are no passwords that can just be shared around, because that would obviously be a huge security vulnerability.

In the .Mil world, they are known as Common Access Cards. So the first thing you do every morning is to whip out your CAC and stick it in.

Yep. That's how I know about it.

You mean the CAC Card?

After entering the pin number, and going to the atm machine.

so there are no points of failure in Active Directory or other systems that could be locked down by bad actors?

not trying to be a doomer or a pain, btw, just exploring possibilities.

If you have physical access to the media/machine in question, you're basically 90% there to having full access to everything.

fair, just considering angles.

Not really. Disgruntled employees are always a security threat, even in normal times. The systems are set up to be protected from them as much as they are protected from outside actors.

Edit: and no worries. Asking questions is the best way to learn things.

You can remove access from everyone and then lock the ldap to not be able to get access. I don't think that will happen but it is not unheard of plus I assume what ever solution they have there is a way to get access back to the ldap

Already happened - https://xcancel.com/elonmusk/status/1886102414194835755

If they knew IT they might pull a cryptolocker stunt. But the government can be very persuasive and would get the passwords one way or another.

Pretty sure both the Treasury department and the Pentagon will nuke their servers if they even see Elon and his team of boy geniuses on the sidewalk out front.

Have a look at this video about one of the D.O.G.E. boys.

proud of the lil cornhusker, that's a great bit of work on some historically important documents.

Cornhusker also demonstrates the knowledge and skill that D.O.G.E. needs to do the job. Absolutely fabulous!

Knew about Cornhuskers. I'm an ubernerd and have no clue about how to do what he has done. I've got 3 memory rich graphics cards so maybe I'll rectify that. Not to worry, MAGA for the win. Be well.

I specifically said that the first thing that the Trump admin should do is seize the computers on Day 1 by locking out everyone from the building and changing the passwords.

They've gone less aggressively than that, so I suspect a lot of actionable evidence has already been destroyed.

I'll be honest, I regularly interact with the VA as some of the doctors at my workplace work across both institutions.

They are not competent enough to "lock them out of the servers"

They likely don't even know how to change passwords to access them, at an AD or administrative level.

They are as incompetent as you think they are, and possibly even more so

reminds me of something I once encountered...

went to a local tech college, and as part of the requirements for a class, we had to have our own hard drives and thumbdrives. I noticed some weird behavior on the systems, behavior that soon spread to my own computer when I got home. after a few weeks of this annoying new "feature," i dug in and figured out the problem, fixing both my own computer and my fiance's.

Then, because I'm not a complete asshole, I informed the school's tech team, and they rather bluntly told me it was impossible because of the way all the computers used a networked version of windows to boat the machines, and in fact it was impossible for a virus to travel upstream to the server hosting the OS.

Having done my part, i made a point of avoiding the annoying "open(0)" option when using the college computers from then on.

Later, I got into a discussion with one of my teachers in the IT wing of the school and happened to mention this, and he did the closed eyes eyeroll while shaking his head and said something to the effect of "they don't know what the fuck they're talking about..." in a combination of annoyance and defeat (at least that's my impression looking back at the moment).
