By that I mean changing all the passwords and refusing to disclose them in a desperate gamble to 'win.'

reminds me of something I once encountered...
went to a local tech college, and as part of the requirements for a class, we had to have our own hard drives and thumbdrives. I noticed some weird behavior on the systems, behavior that soon spread to my own computer when I got home. after a few weeks of this annoying new "feature," i dug in and figured out the problem, fixing both my own computer and my fiance's.
Then, because I'm not a complete asshole, I informed the school's tech team, and they rather bluntly told me it was impossible because of the way all the computers used a networked version of windows to boat the machines, and in fact it was impossible for a virus to travel upstream to the server hosting the OS.
Having done my part, i made a point of avoiding the annoying "open(0)" option when using the college computers from then on.
Later, I got into a discussion with one of my teachers in the IT wing of the school and happened to mention this, and he did the closed eyes eyeroll while shaking his head and said something to the effect of "they don't know what the fuck they're talking about..." in a combination of annoyance and defeat (at least that's my impression looking back at the moment).
