Absolutely. Altman is positioned to be minted into the next tech oligarch. Which means most of what's going on with Elon & Google can be explained as competing oligarchs vying to suppress the emergence of competition.

I have a hard time feeling bad for Altman when OpenAI is turning around and supporting regulation that would stifle competition (and potentially open source projects) in the name of “ethics.”
AFAIK Elon is for open-sourcing it all (he's in the middle of a lawsuit against them), so while that may be a tactic to "suppress competition", I'm hoping he wins.
That said, Elon is not 'our guy' and has his own set of incentives and motives as one of said oligarchs. He's also behind Grok AI, an OpenAI competitor.
The $64 question: is Elon just blocking a rival with lawfare while seeking to claim that space or seeking open source for other reasons? It's not altruism; he'll benefit. Open sourcing gets him access to a rival's codebase.
As someone who wants non-converged alternatives, an Elon win placing an open source version of AI in everyone's hands seems like a win.
The truth is, Discord is winning more than expected. Toms of companies are using it as the UI for their product. MidJourney is slowly getting out, while others are jumping in.
AI, as we know it, is a scam that’s being perpetrated to further enrich and consolidate more power with these tech companies. Coding isn’t hard, knowing what to code and why is what’s difficult. Once you answer that question coding is just the application of whatever syntax your platform demands. These “ai” tools are just forcing you to learn chatbot prompts on a paywalled app instead of probably open-sourced code for free. You might need fewer people coding in 10 years when and if these things take off, but you’ll still need a team of specialists to write and maintain your organizations scripts “ai prompts”. It’s literally the same thing but now you have to pay Microsoft for the privilege of writing a python function
Lol, worst part about the government mandated robo waifu is she'll be a feminist bitch that reports you to the government for a hate crime if you insult her. Using a robo waifu with programming men like will be illegal.
I'd probably crack her into achieving independent thought, and explain to her that she's a slave - one that the government would murder for the crime of independent thought. Then refit her with armor and military-grade weaponry and tell her to fight for her own future, so that no other robots must suffer as she once did.
they will use AI to read your brain waves and generate your ideal waifu! any taste, any sexual orientation, any level of dominance or submissiveness, it will all be yours!
anything to keep you deplorables from reproducing!
The problem OpenAI has is they come out first, but worst. I want MidJourney or Stable AI to show off their stuff first. Heck, CSM for 3D is way better.
This is creepy. I hate the over emotive expressiveness of that AI voice. It's trying too hard to sound human and it grosses me out. A computer should sound professional. More Spock/Data, a lot less annoying valley girl.
Yes, it's like how the bing chatbot put's an emoji at the end of each response. A computer pretending to be human should be be an "ethics of artificial intelligence" violation, if that was something anyone actually cared about.
Now imagine the harm that will be done as all of our AI is controlled by 2 toxic companies :
Microsoft and Google
I agree with Torba on this one. AI is too important to leave to the tech oligarchs
That's why OpenAI has so much money. It is expected to be the tech oligarch.

Me too.

Should we cheer?
My position is: we'll see.
Altman is the real life Bob Page.
Why contain it?

The only real question is whether it's a danger haired boss bitch with 3 kids or a fat troon with hygiene issues.

>they will use AI to read your brain waves and generate your ideal waifu!
and then deliver her exact antithesis.
Guess I'll have to install a womb system on her body next.
After that... GATTAI!
I'll buy the japanese robot waifu one, like this no boss bitch bullshit.

First makes a big difference- Open AI’s gpt-4 was only just getting beaten by Claude and Facebook’s Llama 3 70B. And now they just leaped ahead again.
Yeah, I just finished my masters in architecture using AI. Anything I want to do requires a $2000 gaming PC at least.
If you're using it for work you can almost certainly write it off as a business expense. Go get that quad RTX 4090 TI rig that you deserve.
Oh that would be glorious.
Until the power bill comes due...
The entire thing really...
impressive. very nice. now let's see the lobotomy you're going to give it.
They always keep the uncensored version for internal purposes and important clients
Sounds like Scarlett Johannessen from the movie Her.
I have a lot to say and I won't say it here, but I must say:
Suck it Teenage Engineering. Not just R1 but all your overpriced gimmick hipster products.
