Because it hurts their bottom line as they currently sell an inferior product.
Put it this way, would you rather play Battlefield 2042 or be able to play Bad Company 2 without worrying about hacked servers AND support a library to keep running?
It'd be HUGELY popular and provide a boost to any library participating, which is why they don't want it as it shows how lacking they are currently.
I want to play battlefield 1942 all day long. Then l want to fire up battlefield vietnam and talk to my buddies from 2010.
Nintendo has been doing this for (console) generations with their shitty e-stores continually selling the same shit ported to a new system with somehow worse controls or upscaling that doesn't look right.
Then a few years later they shut it down because 'oh well the servers cost too much' and do it all over again.
Meanwhile the rest of us are over here just downloading ROMs of all those old games because it's now impossible to actually purchase the product I'm after instead of some butchered remake that then got ported three times over and is now a hideous mockery of the original.
I'm looking at you, every Squaresoft game from the SNES era...
They want to be able to ban second hand sales of games, require you to buy a licence to be able to play that title whilst also requesting a monthly fee forever more to access your games so they can apply the same modern licensing system to retro games and milk consumers for everything they've got.
At that point, people will pirate.
"I used to do
drugspiracy. I still do, but I used to, too."I have found that a ducks opinion of me changes on whether or not I have bread.
Sorry studios who shut down ''always online'' services for a game you sold ( and claiming you ''sold a temporary license to use'' dosen't legally fly in my nation ),
Your abandonwares are fair game for third-parties to bring back to life.
your compliance isn't a factor.
It's why I love my 2DS XL currently it's got a 128 memory card in it and a massive library of games. I could play on it exclusively for years without an internet connection with my current collection alone.
Yarr harr fiddle DeeDee
It is amazing how retarded triple A has made piracy a moral right (especially you, nintendont faggots). Only indie games have any integrity left.
Unfortunately even some of them are joining the shit show.
Yeah usually it's indie devs with retarded investors demanding denuvo or something.
Because fuck you
The law needs to be adjusted. Companies should be forced to choose between refunding purchasers or prison sentences (Not fines that can just be brushed off). If they don't want to preserve the servers, they must provide the server software or make an offline patch.
Other options if they don't want to refund are to keep the online servers running or commit to an "end of life" plan that would allow the game to keep functioning without support.

Games with server browsers are the best. Find a server that fits your playing goals or personality. If you are MAGA find a server with a lot of MAGA playing. If you are tranny, find a tranny friendly server. Basically everyone is happy being with similar people.
With match making and the restricted over polices game chat.. social aspect of gaming is dying.
The ESA was always in it's own self interest. Not for the gamers, not even for the companies that it supposedly represents.
But just to continue it's own existence. Their only actual goal did nothing for gaming. Getting ratings onto games. It was always a way to ban things they felt objectionable. Entire countries will wait for ESA style governing bodies to rate a game, and then ban anything Mature and up for reasons.
It reminds me of those block lists on social media. You join it, thinking it's in your best interest to avoid dealing with people. But you have no idea who you're blocking. Are they horrible people? Are the people making the lists ideologically driven? You have no idea. You just let someone else gatekeep what you can and cannot see.
It's really dumb to let others have that much power over you. But in the ESA's case, it was self govern or bow to government control. And given how the government operates, you don't want them anywhere near something you enjoy.
Frankly I don't see how they get a say in the matter.
