New York is not a blue state: New York is a red state attached to New York City. But even without counting the city, it's still one of the most populous states in the union with a large number of potential Republican donors. If he wants their money, he needs to let them know that they're not being written off or forgotten. Dismissing millions of conservative up-state New Yorkers because their votes are outweighed by the cancer that is NYC is the same mistake the RNC has been making since the 80s.

Nevada, North Carolina, Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

New York is solid blue at the presidential level.
Trump lost New York by 23 fucking points in 2020 and more Republicans have left the state since then.

And why would you try to make it less blue? It's winner takes all, regardless of whether they win by 1 vote or 90 billion.
He would try because down ballot races are a thing. Winning the Presidency doesn't matter without the House and Senate on your side.

Hypothetically, every single area of NY state votes red. All of New York state doesn't have the voting power to change the state's outcome in an election if New York city votes the other way.
It's like the situation we have here in Canada. If Toronto votes one way, and the rest of the country votes another, the rest of the country doesn't have the voting power to change the outcome.
No. Since you pose as an explanation that he is trying to make it less blue, I'm asking: why on earth would you want to do that, given the fact that it is winner-takes-all.
There may be some low-hanging fruit where you can make it less blue while expending very little in terms of resources. That might be worth it. Actually seriously trying to make it less red is not.
I also said I thought he was wasting his time trying. Turning that over from the blue is going to take a lot of work. And I don't think it'll work even if he tried.
He might have a little luck since NY got a taste of the sanctuary city goodness they wanted, and it worked out as predictably as clockwork.
But it'll never be enough. I mean, you're talking about people who have a cognitive dissonance with the reality around them. Getting through that is not going to be easy.
It's because of his ego, plain and simple. He was (and will be) a phenomenal president, but 90% of his problems come from his own ego. Likely he believes that if he is the Republican candidate and manages to win New York, he'll go down in the history books for that.
He was a decent President and possibly the best President in my lifetime if I only look at his tenure during 2017-2019. However I still have to take 2020 into account and his various disastrous mistakes in that year on handling COVID and BLM riots bring him down a lot in my overall evaluation of him.
He is a narcissist at his core and New York is his real home state even though he is residing in Florida now. He yearns to win it as a sign of acceptance.
It will never happen and he will have wasted precious resources that are limited on this fruitless endeavor.
I want Trump to win 2024 and I think this move of contesting New York is an unforced error.
