There's some kind of profound irony to the guy who wrote just about the tropiest harem bait around being the one to show up and make something so important like this happen.
Watsuki was fined 200,000¥ (barely more than 1300$ now) for possession of CP. If Japanese law actually functions that way, they have their own set of issues. If not, then I question what he actually was in possession of.
Edit since you made one:
actual pedophile
...
convicted in court
Actual pedophiles that get convicted in court in first world societies get jailtime, or execution in some cases. Watsuki got a slap on the wrist for something that is supposedly a serious offense. The Japanese must have different definitions of CP than we do.
I'm kind of with you here, especially after seeing the paucity of details available in English.
As morally uncomfortable as it is to come to this guys' defense even in a hypothetical 'devil's advocate' manner, a wiser mind than those of our bandwagon woke-scold enemies will recall that, often, "The devil is in the details."
I pushed back because I vaguely recall that he got hit with only a fine as all of models were legal except for one (she was 15 or something?) or a few, which can be excused with an "oops, assumed they were all legal". I only just looked up again his result was but didn't dive into the details.
I don't have all the court case info either, but I see Western weeb media still going with the "naked teens" wordage. To my understanding, teens are between 13 and 18 (some say its 10-19, but eh...), where at least 16 is legal in Japan. So semantically, leftist weeb journalists can label him "convicted pedo" without any context, and drive-by readers end up making false assumptions if they don't dig into the story.
Personally, I'm really not into flat-chested (or less endowed) women, but if they're of age and some guy likes it, I can't screech "pedo".

I always thought "teen" was defined as thirteen to nineteen, because "teen" is at the end of every word for those numerical values. It's similar to how the name of every day has the word "day" at the end of it.
I'm splitting hairs here, but I usually think of the definition in relation to legal adulthood, which for some important rights and laws is 18 years of age. Technically 19yos are teenagers, but I refer to them as adults.

It looks like you already researched the case, but that is absolutely true too, for some definition of CP. I have talked to Japanese people about this (various demographics, not just creepy otaku) and they often didn't understand why we consider someone having nude pictures they didn't create as on the same level as production of CP or child rape. I sometimes try to explain the slippery slope, how just participating in the groups that circulate that shit fuels supply, or how people who assault children are always found with CP - but I'm not gonna try to change their culture. Every country has its own peculiarities. (Japan will harshly punish people who distribute any porn without the mosaic.)
I'm more concerned with the woke clown world stuff in the west, or places like France that ban paternity tests.
I mean, Love Hina is absolutely responsible with solidifying all the worst tropes in harem and romance to this day after Tenchi/Ranma set them up. Its a cancer that will never leave us. Negima is at least much better about it and I'd say actually worth looking into.
Its basically his life's work, considering he has been working on it and its sequel since like 2003.
Also, be sure to make sure which version you are getting into. The manga, both animes and live action are all completely unique stories for some reason.
He was the copy though, that's what I said. All the worst parts of Love Hina were already in the previous harem series before it like Ranma (Naru is just a worse Akane somehow), but they were new and unique then. He just ran them into the ground by over use and exacerbating it until it was almost a caricature of itself.
Negima showed he was more than capable of doing better, but for some reason Love Hina is the series every hack writer chooses to copy instead.
Akamatsu-sensei famously had to write the first few volumes of Negima as haremshit before he could pull the rug out under his publisher and turn it into a shonen.
There's this one manga of his that I honestly really like the idea of, called A.I. Love You, which never got an anime adaptation--and now probably never will.
Probably also because it looks like an Oh My Goddess ripoff, coming out after that but before Love Hina.
I, for one, wish the best to the land of the rising sun in their battle against these demons.
I still don't like the man's work, but his principled stance on this has been consistent enough to respect and I absolutely wish him all the work.
Came here to say this.

Negima is my favorite manga, despite not liking fanservice.
Better than the reverse: Making a great series, and the creator is an actual pedophile.
Rurouni Kenshin, anyone?
Edit: Five downvotes. Why did this trigger people? It's a factual statement--the man was convicted in court.

I...did not know that. Huh.

Ah Fuck, news to me...but you have my thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Step one : Remove Gaijin.
I may have to start reading his work now.
I say that as someone who's only heard of Love Hina through others' hatred of it.

Oh, he did Negima? Been meaning to get into that. Neat.
Its basically his life's work, considering he has been working on it and its sequel since like 2003.

Characterizations don't become tropes until other people copy them. I'm not sure it's really fair to blame the source for it.

Love Hina was the first Manga I collected and I fucking loved it. 11/10 would recommend. His other works...meh.
