[Hades] Is there a mod that changes the character portraits to accurately represent what these Greek mythology characters actually look like? Image is the retard dev's version of Eurydice. (media.communities.win)

I got the game for free after a friend kept telling me to try it. I noped out after seeing Lance Reddick in a wig cast as Athena. I checked out Based Mods and Nexus and no luck. There is one on nexus for removing portraits so I know it's possible.

They know what they were doing, deliberate as a fuck you, the fuckers.

Would be nice to mod out 100% of the dialogue as well. It's mostly melodramatic garbage.

The writing is woke trash, including making Achilles and Patroclus gay lovers.

Did you play the game? Please help:

Look at this shit image of "Aphrodite"

is this the only portrait of her in the game? or are there angry, happy, or other facial expressions or body changes for this character?

I think I found the files but I can't play the game at the moment, so any changes I won't be able to tell if it works till I get around booting it. But knowing this tidbit would really help me know if I'm on the right track.

It's been a couple years ago now. Bought it on Switch on a sale primarily because I'd liked Bastion and Transistor. I don't remember a lot of exact details like that.

I doubt if I'll buy their next game.

If you can't find one, you could see what the portrait removal mod does, and try to make your own, depending on how complex it is.

The description of the mod says the following:

Removes all images of Aphrodite from the game. Particle effects will still show when taking a boon from her.
Should work with mod loader, although you can also manually replace the files in the game like so:

replace the "Game/Animations/PortraitAnimations.sjson" file to remove portraits from boons and the codex.
replace the "Game/Obstacles/House.sjson" file to remove the image of the scroll decoration in Zagreus's room.
replace the "Scripts/ConditionalItemData.lua" file to remove the option to buy the scroll decoration from the contractor shop.

PortraitAnimations.sjson looks like the main one, see what that's like and if you could just replace/redirect to your own image.

If you wanted it to match the game style, you could even just take that image and shop it a bit until it's more to your liking.

That's the plan :-D I just wanted to check first, because if I do it it's just going to be topless big breasted women that will have no ties to the artistic style. If I do make it I might, might, release one using ai generated hot chicks that fit the game's art style.

I read that the game is designed to be super easy to mod, but I haven't looked into the file structure and part of me suspects these fuckers would go out of their way to make just this one part more difficult.

I unpacked some pkg files thanks to deppth and the textures in the GUI.pkg seems to be the one holding the character portraits. But I'm not sure if its the only asset file I need to alter. Can't test atm, don't have the saves. I suppose I can draw a mustache on Hadesman (whatever he's called) and see if it shows.

Dev.pkg errors when unpacking so... I assume it's encrypted, if that is the case and the actual assets that needs modding is in there then well, fuck, they really are a bunch of dog-water bitchasses.

Here's what producer of the game himself said on steam about that blant black racism and cultural appropriation of white, greek culture.

"As stated in other contexts, the Greek gods ruled over the entire world, not just ancient Greece. They are called the Greek gods because the Greeks worshipped them, not because they were ethnically Greek. Various artists may choose to ignore this in their portrayal of the gods, but it does not change the source material. As a lifelong student of Greek myth and the game's writer, my foremost goal in my own work was to honor the source material that has inspired me for so long."

Clown world at it's finest.

The same reasoning used to cast Idris Elba as Heimdall.

The same Heimdall who is referred to in Norse myth as

AND I QUOTE

"Whitest of all the gods."

(thanks to Andrew "The Mythology Guy" Sarran for that info)

As stated in other contexts, the Greek gods ruled over the entire world, not just ancient Greece.

That's not quite how Greeks conceptualized it. It's counter-intuitive to us today but they were comfortable with other peoples' deities being separate and different than their own pantheon yet equally valid and deserving of respect.

They are called the Greek gods because the Greeks worshiped them, not because they were ethnically Greek.

And yet every time the Greeks portrayed their own gods, they are depicted as looking like Greeks.

Clown world, indeed.

There was also the ancient concept of gods being tied to the land their people claimed as territory.

"How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?"

Okay, so while I'm not a fan I can accept that they do have artistic liberty to design their characters any way they want... but to actually claim that you're being faithful to the original? What a moron.

They absolutely do, I agree 100%, but I argue their choice isn't artistic liberty, but based on ideology and deliberately defy what people imagine these gods are portrayed in popular culture. It's no different from race swapping in reboots and adaptations. The first deity that helps Hadesman is a black Athena, that is a statement: Fuck you, if you disagree with my choice - you're a bigot.

I quit out, check the wiki, saw all the uggos and got to working on fixing this issue.

Take what he said and would the producer say the same if someone made a game where African deities are replaced by white men with blonde hair? Or is artistic liberty one way with people like him? Past trends indicates he'd be big mad.

I'm reminded of a reddit post I saw a while ago asking why gamers set anime girls as their profile pictures, and the best reply was "because I like it and I don't care what you think." If these guys had gone the same rout I'd fully agree with them, but instead they have to wrap themselves up in lies to try and justify something that doesn't even need justification.

The gameplay is solid, the voice acting is top notch, the art style is hit or miss depending on your tastes, I personally really liked it. IMO it is a really good game. The company has been known for really innovative integration of gameplay and story from their first offering. In this case the metagame premise of you are playing a videogame so you get to start over when you die is woven into the story. You HAVE to run through the game multiple times, win or lose, to advance it.

That said the story is generic gay commie subversion: fathers bad, men bad, tradition bad, hierarchy (when led by men) bad, women always right, children know better than their parents, deviant relationships are normal. And of course the basic premise which is "the only way to be free is to escape (or possibly kill) your father".

women always right

I dont know if I would say that. The Olympian gods are shown to be aloof and uncaring about your situation except maybe Artemis (which would make sense as she is the only one not in Olympus), and see you as a toy in their own games against Hades.

I also dont think they showed Hades as particularly evil. Harsh yes, but not evil. And the game does kind of show Zagreus as being rash and impulsive for wanting to go to the surface so bad he is willing to fight and kill anything in his path to get there. The "You have to kill your father to escape" thing also kind of rings hollow for me as a slight since Hades is both A) By far the hardest boss in the game and will therefore whop your ass most of the time, and B) is immortal, so it is kind of moot in the grand scheme of things.

But then, I am also not one of those people who thinks the characters in the game look that bad, and that they all fit the style the game set out for. Even the Muse being what it is seems like a reference to the Disney's Hercules rather than a malicious destruction of Greek lore.

It is more subtly subversive than portraying Hades as outright evil. Instead it portrays him as clueless about the reality of the situation and ultimately his authoritarianism is due do irrational fear of the consequences of investigating and trying new things that Zagreus KNOWS (because youth always knows more than elders) are better.

Then the only way the relationship is "healed" is not by Zagreus acknowledging his father's lawful authority and then working for change by strengthening the relationship but by Hades humbling himself in defeat before Zagreus and eventually Persephone.

Maybe it is just a difference of perspective. I thought the game was fairly good to Hades, and when you beat it the first time you learn that Hades was right to say you cant go to the surface. And while he does eventually change his mind (yes, after being humbled in defeat), he is still the only one of the gods that cares about you, as the Olympians see you as merely a pawn even after you beat the game.

I also dont think I would count Persephone having sway over him, since she can do that even in the actual lore of Greek mythology.
