Especially when you can't get a refund for something you bought legitimately and then became 'unfit for purpose'

Basically Sony is selling something they have no right to sell.

They should say very clearly - you are RENTING this off of us and YOU DO NOT OWN IT. But all the t's & c's are hidden away and small.

A scam is still a scam even if you warn people about it.

well I just bought an Xbox X over the S for this very reason.

I won't be buying any downloadable software or movies. Plus the X series is backwards compatible with my entire previous gen Xbox library. If I'd gotten the S I wouldn't be able to play any of it. I got the X on black friday for a great deal - the PC equiv tech specs would cost double

I have 5 PC's and a Gaming Laptop. Consoles still have their uses - especially party games. How else you gonna play Mario Kart?

I hope people sue.

Well the lawsuit is going ahead - so hope they win. I was furious when I lost my original Gauntlet from my Xbox 360 when Midway pulled their library.

In some boneheaded SCOTUS decision, they ruled companies are allowed to force people to waive their right to sue or seek redress in some shrink wrapped EULA.

What we see now is the result of that. Sony will not be sued. Anyone who bought any of these things within the last 90 days who attempts a chargeback will be banned from PSN and basically using a Sony anything forever.

Yeah I figured it was like that in the fine print. We reserve the right to revoke whatever, whenever.

There are more jurisdictions than just the USA.

Was Discovery Network programming available to non-US subscribers? I'm not sure that it was.

But, yes, it would be interesting to see how Sony behaves where the law actually protects people.

Precisely why I miss having an iPod where I just downloaded all 2500 CDs onto it. Also whenever I get a house with the space I want to have a massive physical media library including vinyl

Even though I have Spotify I still buy about 10 cd's a year. I like to support the artists whose music Iove. But I haven't bought a Bluray in a long time. But obviously the physical copy of a video game is a way better present than a gift card - so I try to buy all hard copies as gifts as well

We had Scholastic Book Club at school. You'd order the books through the school - similar?

This was always the intent of the "all digital future" when Microsoft tried aggressively pushing it a decade ago. Now Sony -- who ironically mocked Microsoft with a viral ad about sharing games on the PS4 -- is doing exactly what everyone feared Microsoft would do.

At least back then people had some wherewithal to push back, but it was obviously fleeting resolve.

I buy games to support developers and pirate AAA first to make sure they dont suck

I havent bought any other media since 1998 but I occasionally 1-2 times a year go see a movie in the theater for nosyalgia and it is inevitably a disappointing experience.

Here's an archive link. https://archive.is/bV7Qu

Definitely sucks that Sony is doing this, but it's part of why I've always preferred physical media. The other part being censorship of digital media. It's also why these companies want everything digital only. You will own nothing and your happiness is a non-factor.

People always think the worst that's going to happen is they'll lose access to it.

No, the worst that can happen is they edit it...

Been preaching this for years to all my family and friends. Worked at a bank in disputes and realized digital anything is just another word for rental.

There's security risk in pirating software, plus there could be missing features due to online stuff. But there's absolutely no reason not to pirate every single piece of music, tv show, and movie you want to watch. The product you get is just better than what you can pay for.

My 100TB Plex, PlexAmp, and Kavita server completely agree.

And just so everyone is aware I do still buy games and movies.
