At a time when mass migration and ai advancements will increase competition and diminish employment opportunities, the education system is making damn sure no kid will have any competitive advantage. Unemployment for life. Simply brilliant.
It's not just Oregon. Things in NY are functionally at the same level. Technically there's still graduation standards, but it is functionally impossible to fail a high school student unless they literally never show up to class.
Fair, but it has to be NEVER showing up. Even if you show up like 1 day every week or two, you just need to tell the teacher "Hey, I want to make up all the work I missed" and the teacher is required to give you a chance to do so.
They don't make up the work though, those sorts of students only show up occasionally to hang out with friends, hook up with girls/guys, and probably sell drugs.
Since Oregon abandoned its essential skill requirements for high schoolers, graduation rates have skyrocketed.
I wanted to know the numbers behind "skyrocketed" and the article failed to deliver:
SB 744 went into effect for the 2021-22 school year. The sky rocketing might be true going forward but [according to the summaries of graduation rates here, it was mid-60% in 2009-10 and made gains every year up to nearly this 81% grad rate.] (https://www.oregon.gov/ode/reports-and-data/students/pages/cohort-graduation-rate.aspx) 2018-19 was 80%; 78.7% the year prior. Few percentage points up year on year to the present, since the 2009-10 data. Maybe (probably) they had other (less official) shortcuts in place since 2010.
The author should have spent more time on the results of standardized test scores, that would be more impactful. Would also be an improvement if everyone focused on improving those scores instead of the graduation rate, which is easy to improve with all kinds of shenanigans like "allurus" is saying elsewhere in these comments.
Highschool should be optional, and the working age should be lowered to 13. We all know that a loooot of a certain kind of person who be more useful to society at AutoZone instead of in school.
You can’t teach an oaf to read and write. You can show him how to sell wiper fluid, though.
Everyone knows why they are doing this and it starts with 'n'.

not sure if you lost more IQ writing that, or I did trying to read it
Por que no los dos?
Nepalese
Nazis, clearly.
Well, that's not the only reason, but it is probably the biggest one.
It's also going to be the actual retards they get saddled with and waste money on. Same with illegals, at least in some places.

They thought boomers refusing to retire was bad, just wait a while. AI will take their jobs away before they can even get promoted to mine
Slaves to the state. 100% by design
Laughs in chief technology and design officer.
States just need to stop recognizing high school credit from Oregon and force a GED test for anyone with a diploma from there.
The civil rights act makes it illegal to use any kind of meaningful performance testing.
Not for jobs. I worked for a large, publicly traded company that had tests for every job.

The never showing up to class does weed out a lot of the students though.

Imagine creating a system that relegates children to a menial underclass and thinking that you are doing a good thing.
Insane how many white woman have been convinced to destroy thier (and other) children's future with just a little social pressure.
Get rid of the foreigners. They can't even speak our language, why the fuck are they still here?
Ethnic cleansing.
Need to propagate that idea because it is true.
Get all of your overseas travel done now, before planes fall out of the sky with depressing regularity.
Why even have school then? Free childcare so mom and dad can both be wagies I guess.
Top Kequity
I’m surprised to see this from the Hill. Seems like something they usually applaud
We dindu numbers
Well at least Oregon is making it clear to employers that they probably shouldn't bother even interviewing anyone that graduated after 2022.

This is a step in the right direction.

Sucks for anyone decent living in Oregon, but I guess we at least have an official dumping ground for all the useless sorts.
I say that new kids are really dumb, and people don't believe me, but then statistics like this. These weren't as bad many years ago.
