The part of the Fediverse that Mastodon users call "Alt Fedi" is much better than Gab. It's like Gab in that it allows free political speech, but it also allows obscene speech which Gab bans. I recommend bae.st, poa.st, and gameliberty.club as instances to sign up with.
It's multiple sites ("instances") that either connect with or block each other.
This leads to two spheres - a "safe space zone" mostly running the Mastodon software and a "free speech zone" mostly running the Pleroma and/or Soapbox software.
I strongly recommend free speech instances because, unlike something like Gab or Truth Social, usually extends free political speech to obscene speech. Just be aware it's the Wild West - you will find racists and pedophiles there.
