It's actually not really even very sophisticated programming. Most of the recent advances in AI are due to lots and lots of storage and fast CPUs/GPUs to analyze it to build a model, and then code to "query" that model for "answers" that match their inputs.
The only danger to the world of AI and machine learning is that people will think it is exactly that, even when told it's not. People in power will exploit that ignorance to gain even more control. The technology will improve to the point that everyone looks to some AI oracle or another for guidance. They will become gods to people - just ignore the man behind the curtain.
Short of a meteor strike I don't see any way to prevent that from happening.
