I have a feeling the "style" and character customization stuff is an ESG guideline that these companies are instructed to follow. There are so many Japanese devs doing it that makes no sense unless it was unilaterally enforced.
It feels like something the actual Japanese people making the games don't care about either way, but they figure giving the Western snark sharks a few drops of blood will satisfy them.
It's weird though that they even use type instead of gender in Japanese too, when they could just change it in the English port. Unless there are coolaid drinkers over there too?

It's likely the localization service the are contracting with, anime subs and dubs are begining to have truly heinous and inaccurate localizations now too.

Meaning it was the traditional are you a boy or a girl and boy was default at some point in development, but they last minute made a virtue signal forcing you to move to pick male.
