The thread us depressing since they all do this now, with Team Ninja even having "preferred pronouns" in the character creation for a historical game (twitter.com)

I have a feeling the "style" and character customization stuff is an ESG guideline that these companies are instructed to follow. There are so many Japanese devs doing it that makes no sense unless it was unilaterally enforced.

A video to remind people what ESG is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixsvy91XJh4&ab_channel=FelixRex

100%, wouldn’t surprise me if having pronouns on email headers is another

It feels like something the actual Japanese people making the games don't care about either way, but they figure giving the Western snark sharks a few drops of blood will satisfy them.

It's weird though that they even use type instead of gender in Japanese too, when they could just change it in the English port. Unless there are coolaid drinkers over there too?

Not just doing it, but doing it in such a specifically consistent way across every single version.

Its almost certainly a guideline they were given, and the execs put zero thought into it beyond copying.

Thats what happens when its a big corp or a company under a big corp. All that bushit trickles down. Its why all these studios being owned by sony, micro and tencent are terrible these days.
