That's exactly what "democracy" is. Permitting anyone with a pulse to participate in the political process. That means allowing the wicked, the depraved and the degenerate a foot in the door.
See, voting isn't really self determination. Self determination in a legal sense(because in a moral sense our rights are derived from our Creator), is the sum of the civil rights enshrined in our constitution.
What voting really is, is the right to determine what OTHER PEOPLE are allowed to do, say, and believe. And so called democracy permits the wicked to have a say. Democracy means deliberately not gatekeeping bad actors out of your society.
So yeah this blatant corruption? These backroom deals where degenerates decide among themselves what you are or aren't allowed to watch? That's democracy.
As opposed to other systems where the wicked take what they want with force?
The problem we're facing (and the recent shifting) is a lack of civically minded people who will avoid making eye contact with their neighbor when taking out the trash at the same time. The reason teachers have been getting away with pumping their own version of Original Sin into the heads of children is because parents refused to take an active part in their childs education.
"This long" is a very short period of time, so I'm not sure if it is the best example. Many nations have lasted much longer than the current US lifespan, with different political systems.
For those not watching, Canadian Heritage committee now voting on Bill C-11 amendment after amendment. The text of the amendments aren’t public, there is no debate, and no discussion. A betrayal of basic democratic norms that results from
@pablorodriguez demand to finish tonight.
Bear in mind, the only Bill C-11 deadline is a fabrication of @pablorodriguez to get this bill passed before summer recess. Forfeiting democratic norms for what exactly? This is the model Canada wants to portray to the world? Shameful.
Heritage committee enters the 4th hour of voting on Bill C-11 clauses and amendments with no debate or public disclosure of the text. Now past midnight ET. Astonishing betrayal of democratic norms by @pablorodriguez and the government who demanded this approach.
Conservative MPs ask again to read amendments out loud. Chair Hedy Fry says they can’t do it. She’s right - the no debate, no disclosure approach to Bill C-11 amendments after 9:00 pm was what @pablorodriguez and the government wanted and passed in the House.
I will never get used to committee voting on amendment after amendment without public text or discussion. Conservative MPs repeatedly ask for reading of amendments and Liberal chair Hedy Fry says no, people can read what was done to Bill C-11 once it is published.
And to be clear, after hours of testimony about the harms of Bill C-11 to digital creators, the government rejected it all. Hard to know for sure given the secrecy of the amendments, but appears no changes at all to the user content provisions.
After claiming that Bill C-11 designed to apply to large steaming services, government MPs reject every attempt to establish a threshold. Even $25M annual revenue- itself too low - rejected. Want option that everyone big and small subject to CRTC regulation.
With only 2 1/2 hours left of Bill C-11 clause-by-clause review before @pablorodriguez expiry on debate kicks in, committee will vote on 100+ amendments tonight without debate, explanation, or public disclosure. Awful violation of democratic norms and a stain on the government.
People are living like the frog in hot water. They know what is happening but they do nothing because "it's not that bad". One day it will be THAT BAD and they won't be allowed to do something.
It's lawyer-speak. Canadians asked them to pass it. They never said ALL Canadians, or even MANY Canadians. Just plural Canadians. More than one. Two Canadians asked them to pass it, the ones pushing the bill.
Canadians don't hold referendums for everything. Like the US, we elect representatives. And then they "represent" us on legislative and executive matters.
Yeah I just meant the people never actually asked for this specifically. It wasn't talked about during the campaign season or anything yet they're acting like the people are asking for this bullshit.
The Senate in Canada is the gatekeeper to democracy. They forced Trudeau to drop the Emergency Act by indicating the vote would fail in the Senate. The Senate has final write out of clauses in all bills passed by the house. They have indicated a conservative lean. The bill if there is overreach will be adjusted in the Senate if they even pass it. They have the right to delay it as long as is feasible for proper consideration. They also generally don't favour coalition governments historically because they generally form from tyrannical objectives.
Ah, democracy.

The Family Compact was right.

Understand that animals will fight when cornered.
As opposed to a constitutional republic which is why the US has lasted this long

As opposed to other systems where the wicked are jailed, fought, and killed.
Classic. Voting at night, no ones allowed to read anything, no one notices.

We have to pass it to see what's in it.
Smart money says that mystery box belonged to Pandora rather than Midas.
I guess we shouldn't have dismantled all those DEW line installations after all.

I must have missed that referendum or whatever the equivalent is in Canuckistan?

all legitimate politics happens at 3 am
Nothing bad ever happens in the wee hours of the morning when it comes to democracy.
Ah, Hedy "There are crosses burning in Prince George right now!" Fry.
Great, now I can't get that old Air Farce sketch of Luba Goy as Fry out of my head.
"Kamloops? That tank town?!"
