The problem we're facing (and the recent shifting) is a lack of civically minded people who will avoid making eye contact with their neighbor when taking out the trash at the same time. The reason teachers have been getting away with pumping their own version of Original Sin into the heads of children is because parents refused to take an active part in their childs education.
"This long" is a very short period of time, so I'm not sure if it is the best example. Many nations have lasted much longer than the current US lifespan, with different political systems.
