I was reading an article about how the sister of Elon Musk started a streaming service called PassionFlix which is a streaming service geared to women because the movies are all romantic comedy or some form of romance type show/movie. She was saying that she noticed the large number of women reading 50 Shades and so she figured there was a major market for romance movies.

I'll confess that while I like all the blood and guts manly stuff I will watch or read romance stuff from time to time due to the fact I stupidly watched rom-coms in my teens thinking I could get insight with meeting women (was really bad with the ladies back then). I ended up learning that those are the worst things to look at for advice because if a woman isn't interested, she ain't interested and she won't realize all of a sudden that you are the perfect guy for her.

But my annoyance with the article is that she is doing the opposite of what major IPs are doing. Marvel and DC have to know the general audience for comic books are males and yet the insist on marketing to teenage girls who don't read comics. Despite characters like Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and America Chavez flopping in the comic books, they keep pushing them on screen. Disney buys Star Wars to appeal to boys, and then they market to teenage girls. He-Man, gaming, and the list goes on.

If one of us said "you know I notice that mostly guys buy Sci-Fi so I am going to start a Sci-Fi publishing company that caters to them" we would get so much hatred. Men are free to read romance novels just like women are free to buy video games or read comic books, but demanding that EVERYTHING cater to you is absurd on so many levels.
