DO NOT READ OLD MANS WAR. John Scalzi is a faggot hyperleftist who outright hates us. He blames everything wrong with Sci-Fi on gamergate. He considers John Walker Flynt "a friend". The fact that you even consider giving that man ANYTHING is horrendous. He is against everything we stand for, if we stand for anything at all.
“The Stainless Steel Rat” by Harry Harrison. SF, short and lighter in tone than “Gulag”.
Intergalactic con man is co-opted into working for the Government, but still adheres to his own personal morality…and continues to make a profit on the side.
In order to understand what is wrong with Sci-fi today, you must first understand what they took from you. In order to understand why the sci-fi authors like Heinlein and Asimov are subversive, you must first read the ones that came before.
It's less than 300 pages, should be easily read within a few hours.
As an aside, please for the love of god, don't assign less than 300 pages a week. The Starship Toopers threads were too damn slow. I cannot read that slow.
"a commentary on the angst of 20-somethings, uncomfortably numb with consumer culture, but there is also a bit of a satire on red neck America, and an attempt to explore the nature of celebrity and the arising of religious or quasi religious mythologies within non-mainstream culture."
Although maybe if the people who downvoted me actually read the SCUM manifesto, and acknowledged that it is taught to thousands of women as something to act on, they might understand why I'm suspicious of any woman in power.
do your own research on it, but having read it a decade ago, and how it still resonates to this day, I have been looking for a quality excuse to re-re-re-read this
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

"Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep" it has many virtues.
Easy to find in real life and tons of online reading sites too.
The Red Badge of Courage
Gravity's Rainbow.
Why? Because unlike the GA it's not depressing, it's just very strange.
I'm gonna go for something completely different and recommend Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams.
Positronic Man by Asimov or Ringworld by Niven
If no one minds reading a single book out of a series then I would recommend Red Rising.
Something a little different,
Foolproof - Greg IP
A really good book on risk and safety by an economist. It will be worth it, especially in current times.
Are the current times going to be fiction or is the advice? xD

Renegade History of the United States
Capitalism and Freedom
Modern Man In Search Of A Soul
Propaganda
A Conflict Of Visions
The SCUM ManifestoConsidering the amount of posts about JK Rowling and her pet cause, how about Harry Potter?
Are you seriously suggesting a work by a feminist? Who are you? What did you do with Imp?
It's obviously a joke.

The Magus of Java by Kosta Danaos
Which I linked to as a PDF in a comment on the subject in this thread
Check out the comments or the video to get a sense of what the book is about
in a shorter and lighter (allegedly) note
