White Feminist Apologizes For Falsely Accusing A Black Man Of Rape And Having Him Locked Up For 16 Years (archive.md)

“I am sorry most of all for the fact that the life you could have led was unjustly robbed from you, and I know that no apology can change what happened to you and never will... as a traumatized 18-year-old rape victim, I chose to put my faith in the American legal system. My goal in 1982 was justice — not to perpetuate injustice. And certainly not to forever, and irreparably, alter a young man’s life by the very crime that had altered mine.”

"I am grateful that Mr. Broadwater has finally been vindicated, but the fact remains that 40 years ago, he became another young Black man brutalized by our flawed legal system. I will forever be sorry for what was done to him."

"It has taken me these past eight days to comprehend how this could have happened... I will continue to struggle with the role that I unwittingly played within a system that sent an innocent man to jail. I will also grapple with the fact that my rapist will, in all likelihood, never be known, may have gone on to rape other women, and certainly will never serve the time in prison that Mr. Broadwater did."

White feminist non-apology.

I, I, I, my, mine, I, I, me, I , I, I, my. I'd almost hazard this is another example of female solipsism.

Note the passive voice too. I'm sure her "apology" went through several layers of lawyers. What a cunt

Ugh, how horrifying. To think her lie only came to light because a film exec noticed discrepancies in the story.

Yeah, with the quality of modern film execs, noticing plot inconsistencies is never going to happen again, that's a once in a lifetime save.

When someone lets a lie ruin your whole life, and the goes on to become a millionaire author writing about the thing she let you rot in jail and sit on the sex offender's register for 40 years...?

Yeah, I don't think there's anyone who wouldn't think about murder.

It'd be self defense, really.

Accusing someone of rape is attempted murder; many convicted rapists do not live long. If you're attempting to murder someone, it better be for a legitimate legal reason. Doing it on a whimsy to sell books isn't.

I heard all he wanted was an apology, which didn't come quickly. She probably consulted lawyers and brand specialists before she made this statement, or just waited to see if the public perception problem went away.

Hey all I said was he was going to kill her and CNN was going to pretend it didn't happen.

In a sane rational world, yes. That is not what we are currently living in.

It sounds like the authorities were more to blame, but people who willingly lie to ruin someone's life really do deserve justice in the manner that you describe.

Bitchy feminist did her usual man-hating and comes forward to ease her guilt years later when shit already went down and somebody got to take the fall as usual she gets the light slap on the wrist and go on with her day. If only there was something to stop it but US justice system love to coddle women in general more.

The medievals had the lex talionis: if you made a false accusation against someone, then you received the punishment he would have received.

And to imagine the people today call the medievals stupid, when we let people lie to their heart's delight with no consequences.

That's why I don't hate medieval ages. They seem to have been a huge believer of eye for an eye, needle for a needle approach when dealing punishment. And people say medievals are stupid, I used to agree with it until I got to see the stupidity is even more prevalent and worse than ever nowadays. We have the access to all the info and some people choose to remain willfully ignorant.

Precisely. You can't blame starving people for knowing only as much as they could. We're not starving and yet we insist on forgetting that men and women are different. The medievals would call us stupid, ignorant morons, and they would be right.

I used to hate religion as a New Atheist, so I studied the middle ages to laugh at them, but I came away with grudging and now liberal admiration.

The nice thing about learning history is, you read enough and you start to see that the only things that change are the names and technology. All the motivations and foibles, vices, and virtues that our leaders and decisionmakers have today are the same ones they had a century ago, two and a half-centuries ago, a millennium, two millennia, and even further back.

Oh sure, we happen to know more, (and there's something to be said for the benefits to intelligence decades of stable food supplies have given us) but the same things drive us as what drove our ancestors back in the middle ages. We aren't any more "Enlightened" today than they were.

In my opinion, I think we are more unenlightened. The vanity and vindictiveness is all time high and are praised as virtue.

I'm not sure if I agree with this any more. At least the leaders in anglosphere all seem to be incompetent, out of their elements worst of all only serving their own interests.

Of this guy's 60 years, nearly 1/3 of it was spent in prison, and for 1/3 he was despised as a sex offender.

The other 1/3 he was growing up.

He hasn't lived for a single day.

I'm just glad that he was black, because he would never have been cleared and apologized to (though seeing as it was the 1980s, maybe even convicted).

Well when your entire career is based off being a rape victim you have to keep playing the card.
