If Winds of Winter ever comes out will you read it? I am honestly surprised he doesn’t just admit that he has no interest. You don’t take on multiple projects if you care about finishing. At this point I’d respect GRRM if he just said I’m not finishing and here was my planned ending.

I was a fan of ASOIAF and I won't be reading Winds if it ever even comes out. The show's horrendous ending destroyed all of my interest in the series.
Besides George RR Martin is an open leftist so I don't want to give his lazy fat ass any money.
The funny thing is that while GRRM is a totally open and unabashed lefty, he’s the biggest capitalist mofo out there. He’s licensed his works to everything (model swords, board games, playing cards, video games, TV series, calendars, art books, model figurines, replica coins, you name it) imaginable.
He bought a theater in Santa Fe and charges and runs it like a …gasp..business with expensive tickets and merchandise.
He funded the “Meow Wolf” artist collective in Santa Fe (which is insanely cool, incidentally) to allow these struggling artists (especially PoCs) to be able to have a place to build a collaborative art experience. Tickets are $45 a head to get in.
Lefty on the streets, capitalist in … everywhere else.
That's exactly how commies are though. Rules for the Proletariat not for me.
Same. The show made me have 0 interests in GRR Marting and anything he makes. Is not on purpose or anything, I just do no care. I still have Fire and Blood as a present from my wife and I've got no interest to read it.
I read the books after season 5. Back then I foolishly thought Winds of Winter was coming soon. Yea the show nosedived big time. I blame D&D some but the fact that GRRM was too lazy to finish the books was a bigger factor.
Exactly. I’m shocked HBO decided to work with him. I refuse to watch House of the Dragon. He had the nerve to write another book
They intentionally tanked the final seasons with gurrl power libshit to virtue signal their way into the Star Wars gig that ended up getting yanked.
Anyone could have worked with the material that already existed, and anyone else could have done a better job filling in the blanks.
I read A Game of Thrones in 1997 pretty much as soon as it was released. My AOL instant messenger screen name was GoT based. I literally threw the book across the room in distress when I first got to the Red Wedding, and I’ve probably read books 1-3 half a dozen times. I bought the comic books, I bought the novellas, etc. I loved it all.
I read book 4 once.
I barely made it through book 5. I also haven’t reread any of the books since then.
I stopped watching the TV series when it caught up to the books, and I’m glad I did.
If he ever completes the series, I’ll read it, but I just don’t care anymore.
Why would I read it until A Dream of Spring comes out? If he actually finishes both and I know there's an ending coming, I'll buy them.
Spoiler: This isn't going to happen
He's a pretty bad storyteller, whose update schedule is about on par with your average MLP fanfiction author.
He's also a two-faced scoundrel who aims to pull the ladder up behind him wherever he goes, to ensure that no one else can succeed. Predatory practices.
But it's not about the author, it's about the story. And the story lost the story 1.5~ books back.
Metaculus (prediction market) now gives a 75% chance that GRRM will never finish the series.
I'll probably read it if the reviews are good. I'd rather see Patrick Rothfuss finish up The Kingkiller Chronicle.
I’m not holding my breath on that one either. I think both GRRM and Rothfuss had a REALLY cool idea for a universe/mystery/scenario, they got way more popular than either could have ever dreamed, they fucked around for years, there are now tons and tons of fan theories and incredibly high expectations, and neither of them know how to or truly want to finish the series.
Rothfuss treats his fans like shit. But he gets to launch fraudulent charity fundraisers (Worldbuilders is the charity. It has a hugely high administrative overhead and really doesn’t donate much at all to charity. It also pays a lot for warehouse space, owned by one “Elodin LLC.” Elodin LLC happens to be owned by..Patrick Rothfuss. Yet another example of a lefty taking advantage of the tax code, charitable donations, etc., to funnel more money into his pocket. Disgusting), stream online, do roleplaying shit, etc. Why write when you can just fuck around and have fans fawn over you?
GRRM is a legit superfan, and he has been his whole life. He’s been productive over his entire career, I think he just doesn’t know how to finish things off now. And when you can drive your purple Tesla around, build a tower fortification on to your house, and have “fuck you” money, why not.
Didn't know that about Rothfuss... I'll be sure to read it without paying for it, if he ever does finish.
Yeah, it was disappointing to me. I LOVED his first book, and liked the second as well. Then I went online and I am not a fan of the Rothfuss fandom or Rothfuss himself—he comes across to me as a real dick. Who knows. If ever finishes his series I’ll read it.
I’ll toss out Brandon Sanderson as a author who is hardworking, reliable, and REALLY respects his fans and fandom.
I burn through enough books I don't get too attached to individual authors... After what you've said I'm glad about that. How does the guy have a rabid fan base with such a small library?
I did meet Brandon Sanderson at a book signing once, nice guy, stayed long enough to answer questions from every person there.
Wow, a bunch of people told me to check out kingkiller Chronicles. Thanks for the heads up
Rothfuss has amazing prose. The story and main character are compelling, but it's been 10 years since his most recent full book.
It's an entertaining Mary Sue / Gary Stu story. Just keep that in mind and you'll be entertained.
He'll never finish it. He's too busy being a "celebrity", plus the way Drenna was written in the first two books wouldn't be acceptable anymore.
Martin will never finish the series, I guarantee it.
More likely, he'll die and then the publisher will bring in Brandon Sanderson or Greg Bear or somebody to finish it.
I really wanted more dunk and egg, after the way the show went and him rubber stamping HBOS newly minted turd I have to wonder if there wont be a steep drop off in quality. Also I dont wa t hin using the shows warped messages regarding g the setting they half ignore.
The first three were decent dark fantasy. EVERTHING in the IP afterwards is garbage and I'm amazed people didn't see the writing on the wall.
Slightly on topic an actually good and finished fantasy series: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/series/CTC/the-first-chronicles-thomas-covenant-the-unbeliever
First book has to be pushed through but the payoff is worth it.
Thanks! Thanks to GRRM I only start finished series now.
I would have, but I'm reaching a point in my life where I'm not sure I would have the patience, since his books get longer with each volume. I would certainly buy it and try though. The books are still pretty different from the show, so I don't really feel like I've been spoiled on future events.
It will never be finished and the showrunners shit the bed. Here is how the show failed and what was going to happen. First off Jon IS the real hero, but that is again subverted expectations and we will get into that in a second.
Plot points that lost meaning in the show and I don't know how these idiot youtubers fail to understand GoT. It's Dune in a fantasy setting. . Most important is Jaime. Jaime does kill Euron like the show, but there is no Night King in the books. Euron is the Night King role in the books and the big visible baddy. Jaime's dream tells you what you need to know... https://youtu.be/9WuO4qQK_8g
Jaime's mother is the woman and just like Ned's dream, this tells you something important. Jon's parentage was always supposed to be easy to see. It was a misdirection and in the show, which Martin was involved with heavily early, they even show Jon's mom as a virgin Mary like statue. He also rises from the dead like Jesus. He's the hero we want, he's the hero we expect, but Jaime is the Azor Ahai and traditional hero we get. He's also a Targaryen as is his sister who gets off sexually to fire in the books and whose the spitting image of her crazy father.
TYRion whose name is not without purpose is the only real child of Tywin. He wants his son to be a great hero like Tyr from Norse mythology and he doesn't want his children to be laughed at, but that is what he gets. It's also why he hates Tyrion so much.
Jaime is Tyr in these books. The prophesied savior (but still not the ultimate hero). He loses a hand like Tyr to a cage a Stark wolf, Bran. Bran is Fenrir and probably not the "good" character you think he is in the show. He is more like Leto II in Dune. A demi-god, but still a ruler we shouldn't follow and he is possibly not even Bran anymore and really Brynden Rivers. Jaime will also kill his own sister like the witch foretold the "little brother" would. This will cause him to burn alive or some crap as the champion of the fire god and the twins represent duality, just like the fire god in the show who is really rooted in Saturn worship (good and evil), which included symbolic fire sacrifices to Moloch of children. Something you also saw in the show.
Anyways Jaime beats Euron, but Dany is still the worse villain because we love her, just like we love Paul Atreides. So that all happens like the show, though the descent of Dany would take longer and be more fleshed out if the showrunners didn't rush it to get to Star Wars, which is a job they dropped out of anyways.
The ending of the show is the same, but Bran is not supposed to bring comfort like the show. The true hero is then revealed. It wasn't Jaime who did horrible things and who fit a messiah prophecy, even though he grew as a character and that was awesome. It's Jon. Why is it Jon though? It's because he leaves the power behind. He is finally free of the "wheel" that Dany wanted to break. His sister isn't. Tyrion isn't. All these people will have babies that will kill each others babies for power. Jon goes off with the FREE folk, just like the FREMEN in Dune give you the same message.
Bran? I think you are left with the idea he will eventually fail (like Leto II in Dune ) or even told he is really Brynden at the end and a villain like Fenrir who Bran and he represents in the Tyr story. None of it matters to Jon though. He's done with this crap. That is how to be a true hero in Dune and In GoT. Stop following leaders and power. These idiots are never going to stop killing each other until we all voluntarily give up aspirations of power over others.
“Absolute power does not corrupt absolutely, absolute power attracts the corruptible.” ― Frank Herbert, Chapterhouse Dune
So how did the show go off the rails? Euron wasn't fully developed, they ran with a zombie king instead, then they had to make Euron a bit character and finally they had a woman kill the zombie king cus "strong wahmen". The show failed the second they ran out of source material.
One final note about Jaime. He's meant to challenge us as a reader. We love Jon who ultimately commits incest and we excuse him for the act due to the nature of the Targaryen's and that their attraction is probably biological. We judge Jaime the second he comes on screen, but by the end, he has the same excuse and everything Jaime did, he did for love. Without his love for his sister he may have been the ideal knight. Again this is the duality nature of Saturn (which is what Judaism really is as the Star of David is the Star of Saturn/Chiun). Jaime is the good side of the deity, while his sister represents evil. It's safe to say Martin is a Freemason, just like his friend Robert Jordan, whose Wheel of Time ending pushed duality as well. The dark one and the creator are the same. The voice that spoke with capital letters in the series is always the same person, per Brandon Sanderson. Rand ends up with literal duality in his eyes, because he has become a proper Freemason Saturn worshipper and become like God, knowing good and evil.
Anyways...now you have to wonder. Are these books written to push for a world peace where everyone works together and no one seeks power? Or are they meant to push for an easier to control public who doesn't seek power, so that others can more easily grab it. Dune also had "third eye" cough Aes Sedai, cough Jedi in them. Selfless servants of all, like the Masons try to say they are, but they hold the real power, while you are told to disarm.
Anyways have fun with the indoctrination. You will begin to notice it everywhere. Duality, Saturn cubes (folded up cross).
A very interesting post. I actually noticed the similarities when I read Dune a few months ago. But I haven’t finished the rest of the books but I do notice the Jedi, aes sedai, and Ben Geserit.
I do wonder if they make Jon meaningless due to girl power nonsense. In the show they set up his battle with the night king only to have Ayra be the hero?
"The voice that spoke with capital letters in the series is always the same person, per Brandon Sanderson"
That's not true. See Egwene's words (written by RJ)
BS is a shitty writer. He will burn in hell.
Absolutely I will read it.
Yea I plan on reading it too but I doubt it will come out.
I feel like I get into series where authors just do not finish their books. Martin being one, Rothfuss being another. If winds ever released I won't be reading it because of how shitty the show was and how it ruined it for me, not only the last season but the one before as well, I doubt he could write something in that world to make me forget what they did to his world, not worth it.
I am thankful the Kingkiller Chronicles do not have an adaption yet as it seems that bad adaptions ruin the original for me.
I'll read it but that's not going to be the put down everything to binge read this read. At this point it will be "I'll get to this when I get to this." The whole series lost all sense of urgency.
I mean at this point I'd probably have to reread the first 5 to even remember what the hell was going on.
Good point. I’m honestly surprised his publisher isn’t holding his feet to the fire.
If it does come out I'll read it. I figure I will know if it's worth finishing few chapters in. Don't have anything to lose but time and I've read plenty of bad books.
I'm not going to pay for it, though. I'll either hop on the most likely long wait list and get it from the library or just pirate it.
