You don't remove statues of General Lee unless you literally want to destroy the United States of America. If the left were the liberals they pretended to be, they would hold Lee up as an example for others to follow, a man who worked to reconcile the former Confederacy with the Union and prevent the kind of lasting feud that we see elsewhere in the world. But they want to unbury that hatchet because of their own deranged hatred.
Isn't he basically the antithesis of their worldview? He was against secession and only sided with the Confederacy because his home state of Virginia ended up seceding and he refused to fight against his own local community. They absolutely prefer people to readily abandon anything and anyone if it goes against the "correct choices".
Its all about programming.

For a guy who was leaving the United States of America, I don't think that's a necessary conclusion for all cases. It just is the case here with the Left.
That being said, the correct response is the same kind of gracious and empathetic response the Victorious Ataturk had against the British at Gallipoli:
Thats what Lincoln did though, wasnt it? The deal was that Confederate soldiers who had died in battle would be considered American losses (which is part of the reason the war has such heavy losses on paper. EVERYONE dying was counted) and those who surrendered would be allowed back in. This is why you saw former Confederate generals become commanders again in the US Army, and why they were memorialized. Grant even was one of the first to show this because when Lee surrendered he ordered his men to stop celebrating on the grounds of "These are your countrymen now, so dont celebrate their suffering." Hell, he even allowed Lee and his officers to keep their swords, which is rare and usually a sign that you consider that enemy to be your equal still.
And its why I still defended and respect Lee, even as a Pro-Union, Screw the Confederacy, "Sherman did nothing wrong!", "Fear the wrath of the Jayhawks! Kansas will get her revenge!" type of person.
But like the original comment said, these Leftist want revenge, and I am at the point where if they dug up the remains of Lee and other Confederates and desecrated them, I would honestly not be shocked. They have done similar in the past before (looks to Republican Spain).
Yes: Grant and Lincoln did this, but it didn't help that there were people on both sides of the conflict that wouldn't let it die. And of course the Left won't let it die.

Allegedly some of the smaller statues have been finding their way into the private collections of wealthy dem and lefty donors and supporters for what I can only imagine is maintaining their historical relevance in proper content.
Or, so that the elites will know true history while the masses will be brainwashed into knowing only what they tell us to be true.
