You should look into facebook's dark profiles. They likely DO have data on you, and if they have it, they've sold it.
It wasn't the internet, it was corporatization. It's the same thing that happened to satellite radio, and cable TV.
That said, I do think social media and smartphones played a unique contribution to our current predicament
Freedom is dead. When the so called arbiters of free speech do something like this, you know there is no freedom. Sure the image is wildly offensive to some but that is the point. We have to stop being afraid of words or images. If you are not breaking any real laws then whatever you say or do should be protected

Corporate power forces social compliance. Anyone who claims to be a bastion of free speech is put to trial, denied hosting servers, denied payment processors, denied platforms on Android and IOS. Many fall before this purity test, however shaming them for attempting and failing is redundant. This is what conglomerated power wants, us shaming our own for failing the lefts purity spiral.
