Frankly, I think the same phenomenon happened with the Iron Curtain types; we probably got more infiltrators in the 80s (as opposed to the Russians/EEs we got in the 60s and 70s) post-Brezhnev, as the Soviet Union started into its death throes.

Mixed feelings really. Not sure I want another five million people in Britain, but at least these ones actually share my culture and probably won't vote for Communism. Which begs the question, when they threw the borders open all those years ago, why didn't we import this sort? If you're going to have mass immigration, wouldn't it be better to have them come from compatible cultures? It's not like the fallen British Empire has a lack of cheap labour.
My main concern is that it will be difficult for them to adjust, and with such a large number coming in, there will no doubt be many who will experience particularly nasty culture shock, coming from a 90+% Han Chinese and 95+% east asian environment into multi-ethnic cities.
They might not be swayed back into voting communist immediately, but they'll be susceptible to racial grievance mongering.
I think this will be a relativel small percentage of them, but a 'relatively small percentage' of 5 million is still a shit ton of people.
I would go so far as to say that if you're expecting potentially 5 million HK Chinese to arrive, you might seriously want to consider finding a spot in your country to build a planned city for a sizable chunk of them.

I was just thinking a government that actually had discussion of something as insane as a night time curfew for all men on the actual floor of Parliament would not be interested in importing any more men. AFAIK it's only for people who held a British passport before they handed Hong Kong over to China, or something like that.
