Radical changes to the very structure of our federal government will provide perfect justification for red states to secede. There is no point trying to coexist with people who are actively rigging the game against you.

Fists will be thrown back, because the mandate to try to maintain the illusion of unity on both sides will finally be broken.

There's no way to do it without altering the consitution, and an alteration at that level is not only a fundamental change to government structure, but one that adds new, guaranteed-democrat seats.

The only reason a republican should have for backing such a thing is if they intend to immediately push for secession.

I heard some people here call the lawyer Jonathan Turley as a "rational moderate Democrat".

Here is that moderate openly advocating for the addition of Washington DC as a state so his party can permanently cement their rule with an additional two Senate seats.

"Moderate Democrats" obviously don't exist.

And this is just the start. They want to make voter ID everywhere a thing of the past, too. And much more. It's insane how fast they're moving.

Blatant attempts to tip the electoral scales aside, what is the case against turning DC into a state?

The entire intent of the formation of Washington DC was to serve as the administrative seat of the federal government.

It was never supposed to be granted statehood, because that would give it to much power.

Additionally, because of this people really weren’t meant to live there, and they shouldn’t.

The only fair option is to cede the residential areas to neighboring states and reestablish the federal zone as an administrative area.

From my perspective, because DC is not a state. And I don't just mean in a sense of "it currently isn't a state". DC exists for one reason and one reason only - to be the seat of the Federal government. Everything about the city deals with housing and supporting the government and its employees - a full 25% of residents are directly employed by the federal government And how knows how many lobbyists, and more.

When DC was created initially, it was intentionally separated out from states - written in the constitution, it says that there will be a "District (not exceeding ten miles square) as may, by cession of particular states, and the acceptance of Congress, become the seat of the government of the United States"

And, the federal government can directly control the day-to-day stuff in DC. DC's mayor office only exists because federal laws said "OK, you can have a mayor".

DC is a literal organ or appendage off of the federal government. The federal government does not need representatives to argue at the federal government for the benefit of the federal government.

Thank you guys for laying out the case so clearly.

The alleged case for turning DC into a state can be solved by adding DC to another, already existing, state.

The only actual reason to make it a new state is to give the Dems more power.

For starters that would take amending the constitution and I doubt you're going to get enough states to do that.

Even my dad, who listens to CNN like it's gospel, thinks this is fucking stupid.

I'm an ignent ferrigner, but isn't DC not being a state kind of important? To demonstrate that one state won't dominate the union, or somesuch?

If DC voted red, they would be against statehood.

If Mexicans voted red, they would be against illegal immigration.

If under 18s voted red, they would be against lowering the voting age.

If Republicans controlled the senate, they would want the filibuster.

If conservatives controlled social media, they would be against censorship.

Luckily, this is one power that Congress hadn't handed over to the Executive yet. States have to be admitted by Congress, and jf they're formed from the territory of other states, those other states' legislatures need to agree.

Yes, my comment was a joke.

Hard to tell these days. The clowns outnumber the straight men.
