There's no lock-on gimmick and so much movement going on that FPS ability is definitely a big chunk of your performance, but ttk is huge and positioning and engagement/disengagement strategies matter greatly for securing a kill rather than forcing a retreat, like in any MOBA.

That might be part of it yeah. I kept rewatching to pinpoint the explosion epicenter, which does seem to be on him, because the blast felt like it was further away from him. If it was a shaped charge and his headbutt tilted the drone to face the charge away from him that could explain the lopsided blast.

I also wonder if having his head down from the headbutt managed to place his helmet in just the right position to make it an impromptu full-coverage blast shield for his skull, just to take a fraction more energy away from the impact.

Still need semi functional body parts for adrenaline to work on though, that his inner ear didn't get pulverised by the blast wave so badly he couldn't tell up from down seems like a small miracle alone.
