If it was a shaped charge and his headbutt tilted the drone to face the charge away from him that could explain the lopsided blast.
I also wonder if having his head down from the headbutt managed to place his helmet in just the right position to make it an impromptu full-coverage blast shield for his skull, just to take a fraction more energy away from the impact.
