So it’s been announced that noted author Terry Goodkind has died. For those who haven’t read his books, they were a fantasy series which included a heavy dose of objectivism and libertarianism as well. He was very unabashedly pushing an agenda of “government bad, rise up and live your life in freedom and do what you want to do, you can succeed without government”, and with the news that he has died, a shitton of leftists on Reddit have come crawling out of the woodwork to shit on the man.
It’s actually kinda sickening to watch so many people come out and attack him barely 24 hours after his death and mischaracterise his work as well. There’ll be outright lies of “oh, his books say fuck the poor, only the rich are worthwhile” and similar stuff, and yet reading them, it’s pretty obvious that he very much goes for the complete opposite of general leftist policy and believes that everyone has a chance to succeed if they just apply themselves. Yes, he did some hackneyed writing and relied on one too many dei ex machinis at times, which is fair game for critique, but it’s saddening watching the circlejerk of “I hate his books because they preach that we shouldn’t be reliant on government” begin in real time.
Anyway, rant over.
You think modern lefties read?
If it's not on Twitter or Reddit they don't have time for it.
Remember #ReaderGate?
Harry Potter?
(Looks at current fiasco.)
Never mind, that series has probably been Ministry of Truth'd.
We've always been illiterate.
They turned on J.K so fast you'd have thought she advocated genocide... actually a few of their heroes do that.
You'd have thought she tried to burn down a court house- wait, damn...
Okay, I can do this.
You'd have thought she made a movie about eleven year olds twerking and sucking on their fingers- oh, for fuck sake.
You'd have thought she destroyed the contents of an e-mail server she had been subpoenaed to provide- fuck it I give up. I need a drink.
It really is amazing how quickly they turned on someone they themselves made into a hero and fellated for a decade.
Its also funny how quickly they go full Death of the Author when its something they love, but if a badthinker made something we like the work itself is anathema.
They also realized that trannies has usurped them as the top of the totem pole of oppressed. Oppression is all feminists had, so this could not stand.
Ironically it makes them temporary non-enemies because the Intersectional movement is far more powerful and a threat than TERFs. But we can never forget they will be enemies still on the far end.
No, what was that about?
Anti-gg tried to take the argument about context into the realm of literature thinking that gg hadn't read any books. There's some evidence of the goading and responses here, much was either removed or deleted after it was shown that gg indeed was well read and could outwit little blue checkmarks and their followers with aplomb.
When classics like I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, The Outsiders, The Glass Menagerie, The Bell Jar and Ulysses (To name a few) were all given the SJW treatment in reverse it turns out they hadn't read many books themselves and were BTFO intellectually.
Outrage mongers with shit books to sell (Like Ryan Holiday) managed to propagate the hashtag into a popular trend prior to them being smashed to the ground by our overwhelming numbers shoving them to the kerb.
Many a doobs and cools were roasted in the depths of the slor on that day, I can tell you!
I don't think anyone here is surprised in the least at how scummy these people are or how low they'll sink.
Best way to promote a book is for someone to tell me the Reddit hive mind hates it.
sounds interesting, where should i start? i'm going to need something once i'm done with the expanse.
I thought the first 4-5 books of the Sword of Truth series were pretty good. Lost interest after that though, and there's like a total of 13 in the series
I'll second that recommendation, the Sword of Truth books started out solidly but quality does drop as the series goes on. Personally, I recall having to stop at the eighth book or so because they'd become Objectivist screeds full of uninteresting and ridiculous strawmen - rarely, if ever, enjoyable even when you do share the author's beliefs.
Faith of the Fallen was beautiful. After that it was pure muck imo
Faith of the Fallen was the best in the series. The rest are merely okay or bad.
Holy shit, how did it get to 13. It got so bad after 3
Start out with the first book, Wizards First Rule. They’re broken into various arcs and series, I’ve only read the first 11/12 books or so, and that was the original end of the entire series. Like I said, they’re a bit hackneyed at times but enjoyable.
This is the result of an entire generation consumed by social media. Complete sociopaths that want that next hit of upvotes and self-gratification.
I hope to live a life half as well as Mr. Goodkind did. To die and have reddit, twitter, facebook, etc. say "We are elated he is dead".
Then after he got called out for bashing that artist, he said the real reason he was upset was because the cover art was so "sexist" and behind the times and not appropriate for the type of "strong women of great integrity" that he writes.
That being said though, I have no doubt the Reddit circlejerk OP is referring to is ridiculous and disgusting. Way too many people over there love dancing on someone's grave. Especially over political differences.
An overreaction from TG, to be sure, but yes, high-heeled expedition boots in a pre-industrialized world does seem ridiculous.
I've heard good things about The Sword of Truth, but never got around with it. I'm currently going through the latest few books of Ben Bova's Grand Tour universe, but maybe I'll try The Sword of Truth next.
Edit: I'm reading the Wizards Rules on the Wikipedia page for the series. No wonder the SJWs hate him.
"People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything.
Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true.
People's heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true.
People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool."
Just... don't watch the TV series ?
Shanarra? It was amusingly terrible, at least the first season.
That's Terry Brooks, not Terry Goodkind.
Similar sword-and-sorcery setting, much less political (at least the books).
The series was obscenely heavy-handed with a twist that Brooks set up for twenty years from day one, which was even more of a turn-off than Crixus as a druid.
Dammit. Oh well, at least I didn't confuse him with Terry Pratchett.
only read first half of first book, then got distracted thought is was ok, but read that later books are full of theoretical rants which put me off from continuing.
People love shitting on people that can't defend themselves.
Fuck. I didn't believe this at first so I had to look it up. I love Terry Goodkind. I had just bought the full Children of D'Hara series too which complete my collection of his works. He autographed my copy of Confessor. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkkkk!!!!!!
I enjoyed the power trippy aspect of his writing. He didn't try to hide it and instead played into it heavily. It was like a manga in written form
Reddit is certainly not representative of the book community (or any community really); the vast majority of bookworms don't discuss it online. Reddit has become a complete cesspool of NPC's who are completely okay with political agendas crammed into movies/shows/games/books as long as it fits their worldview.
Corpses don't fight back.
