France proposes breaking dependence on American big tech by adopting Linux (www.windowscentral.com)
posted 71 days ago by theaustrianpainter 71 days ago by theaustrianpainter +39 / -0
Why is the French government ditching Microsoft's Windows and moving to Linux? It's all about America.
France is adopting Linux-based operating systems to reduce reliance on U.S. tech giants.

Wasn't Linux ALSO something developed in the US?

The issue isn't just that you're using systems developed and maintained by US companies, it's that you don't have the tech base to develop YOUR OWN because your regulations stifle entrepreneurship and especially tech development.

I think their idea is to use an open source system that they can build their own proprietary version of and not have to pay royalties to Microsoft. Thats if they ever actually do this.

Yeah, never discount how much ANY establishment loves nothing more than to say they'll do something but sit on their hands instead...

They (Europe) has been saying they would move to Linux for almost 20 years. Some municipalities have but those are few and far between.

They won't do it because the reality is that Linux is not and never will be a viable alternative to Windows. It's an OS for servers that have a very narrowly defined function, not a desktop environment for normies that can be smoothly managed at scale.

If you want a Linux version for regular users then use Linux Mint Cinnamon. I would stay away from any Fedora based distros or distros that use the Gnome interface. Arch based distros is good if you want advance features but those are not distros for regular people. The only Arch based distro that I know of that is okay for regular people is SteamOS and that is mostly for playing Steam games and not a full computer interface.

I will agree it's not for normies but Microsoft had 40 years to entrench themselves going back to DOS. As for scale management, its way easier to deal with.

Only if you don't have users.

This is more or less true.

You can now run 99% of windows app on Linux. Although it's kinda odd to use emulation on Linux, I agree.

I imagine this news has made this bit of trivia fairly common now, but France already does. The Gendarmerie switched to their own in-house version of Ubuntu when Microsoft stopped supporting XP like ten years ago.

The French pension system has destroyed their country. Isn’t it something like a company pays 1.5x tax for each employee? It’s absurd.

Pretty sure Linus Torvalds was a Swede, and "Linux" is an open-source initiative with global contributions.

There have been large institutional contributions from companies based in the US as well, like IBM's Red Hat/Fedora Core (or whatever they're calling it these days).

At this pointt and time, developing a new OS (kernel level) is pretty much impossible.

Even Google couldn't do it. Their Android is reskinned Linux.

There are a dozen Linux distros that have openly declared their intention to simply not comply with the "think of the children" digital-ID push, which France enacted before almost anybody else. To make Linux their default OS would open the door for any Frenchman with a basic level of knowledge to circumvent that requirement.

This will probably go like all the other attempts to ditch Windows and the Microsoft ecosystem. Millions of taxpayer euros thrown away on a turd before switching back.

nah. usually it's that a new guy gets elected and payed of by microsoft to switch back. most muncipalities use custom software to handle filling out simple forms, doesn't matter what os is underneath really.

I'm still shocked no other country has bothered to make their own OS from scratch that isn't reliant on Linux. I think only Iran has tried afaik.

Because governments cannot create or innovate. They are were the least productive members of society go as a quasi-daycare, outside of straight up welfare.

Hasn't the Russian government been reliant on open source software for something like a decade or more at this point? In their case, I think it was more related to saving money rather than dependence or security concerns, however.

Degenerates like Aubrey 'Kirtaner' Cottle, of Anonymous fame, were still hacking into Russian systems, regardless. (Thankfully, this complete and utter scumbag is now in jail after a chain of stupid actions, including defacing the Texas Republican Party's website and breaching bail conditions.)

I'm all for hating on Microsoft and all the sketchy things the owner, and the company, do. Still, "France" should just say so, instead of moving from one US actor to another then claiming antiAmericanism.
