It was hubris. Disney was handed decades of expanded universe on a silver platter, but day one they declared it all non-canon because they wanted to be the ones to write Star Wars, to make it 'better'. They assumed the old fans would slurp it up regardless, and they'd get that mythic Modern Audience on top. Now, it's too late. Most of the original cast is now dead, the brand is tarnished, and ideologues are still too entrenched in the company to admit they're the ones at fault. Maybe in 20 years someone will take another crack at it.
The irony is that the only way Star Wars can be saved now is for a new company to come in and say all Disney Star Wars is non-canon then remake everything Disney attempted to do but better.
And that won't happen unless Star Wars becomes so unprofitable for Disney that they decide to sell it off... And even then they probably wouldn't do it because they'd be dumb to give up the rights. The company would have to go under or be at risk of doing so (which they're not even close to) for you to even have hope if it.
They also know that even if they never made another Star Wars anything, it'd still write checks.
Exactly. Disney is still profitable, only because Disney is an amusement park company. And Star Wars is still profitable because people are still buying content and figurines of the original Star Wars franchise, created by George Lucas. Disney is still nowhere near going bankrupt, and Star Wars is still nowhere near being dead weight to them, even if they utterly wrecked its reputation.
You sure about that? Their parks are in the same "raise prices to make up for fewer customers" death spiral that the theaters are in. And all of the money and effort being thrown into their competitor across the street at Epic Universe is going to let them start eating Disney's lunch.
Disney is in big trouble financially across the board.
With the way Hollywood has been going in the las 8 years, Disney will probably declare all of Star Wars non-canon and launch a reimagining twice within the next decade.
They'd be smart to at least do it with the sequel trilogy stuff, but they'll never do it because of the weird hold/blackmail that Kathleen Kennedy has over the company.
I know there are way more normies than book readers but alienating a loyal group of fans like that isn’t smart. Could’ve just had two continuities. I also remember someone saying they probably would’ve been better off just getting the income from OT and prequel merchandise

They literally would have been better off not doing anything at all. I haven't really kept up with this but the last time I checked, they still haven't recouped their investment from buying Lucasfilm.
It's impossible to know really. The movies themselves haven't come close, but Disney does so much with the IP and it's hard to know exactly how much revenue it's generated. Just think about the huge multi billion dollar investments in the parks. How do you attribute park revenue to a specific IP that's not accounting magic? TV shows on Disney+ is another black hole. The only easily decipherable revenue streams to look at would be direct purchases of media and merchandise.

Someone should make a spinoff with similar themes that ends up being better. Then everyone can forget Star Wars.

Star Wars Episode 9: The Last Command would have been a $2.5-3 billion dollar box office.
Yup. And Mara Jade onscreen would’ve been a big hit. She was a huge fan favorite in the book community

Um, well
I don't need to be an accounting wizard to know that they took a bath on at least part of the investment.
