And that won't happen unless Star Wars becomes so unprofitable for Disney that they decide to sell it off... And even then they probably wouldn't do it because they'd be dumb to give up the rights. The company would have to go under or be at risk of doing so (which they're not even close to) for you to even have hope if it.
They also know that even if they never made another Star Wars anything, it'd still write checks.
Exactly. Disney is still profitable, only because Disney is an amusement park company. And Star Wars is still profitable because people are still buying content and figurines of the original Star Wars franchise, created by George Lucas. Disney is still nowhere near going bankrupt, and Star Wars is still nowhere near being dead weight to them, even if they utterly wrecked its reputation.
You sure about that? Their parks are in the same "raise prices to make up for fewer customers" death spiral that the theaters are in. And all of the money and effort being thrown into their competitor across the street at Epic Universe is going to let them start eating Disney's lunch.
Disney is in big trouble financially across the board.
Oh, it's definitely in a downward spiral, but I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that it's still the only part of their business actually making a profit, and propping up all the rest.
Someone should make a spinoff with similar themes that ends up being better. Then everyone can forget Star Wars.
With the way Hollywood has been going in the las 8 years, Disney will probably declare all of Star Wars non-canon and launch a reimagining twice within the next decade.
They'd be smart to at least do it with the sequel trilogy stuff, but they'll never do it because of the weird hold/blackmail that Kathleen Kennedy has over the company.
