Target regular car drivers with fines/extra charges under the guise of 'going green' and saying these won't apply if you get an electric vehicle
Electric cars haven't got the same mileage as regular vehicles as battery technology is not developed enough and especially with electric trucks and Chinese knockoffs, they are unreliable in slight conditions to downright deadly in an accident.
NOT use any of that money through extra taxes to develop and reinforce the power infrastructure to handle all of these electric cars.
Tax them anyway years down the line as they use the roads and you need to pay for maintenance and they 'abuse' the energy infrastructure..
It's another example of governments in the West unable to make coherent long term planning due to greed and incompetence.
They don’t care. It’s all reactionary law fare at best. At worst, what ever makes them the most money at the time. Kickbacks from EV, more taxes, anything to line the coffers so they can be looted.
And that won't stop EVs from failing to sell. The government can try to force top down adoption all they want, and it won't work. Just like with piracy, people will break the rules to get a better product. If a government favored item is a better product, they won't have to force it because people will adopt it on their own from the bottom up.
Like how it has worked for every single advancement in technology through history.
The average cost of an EV is around $55k. We're in an "unspoken" recession, a bad time for car sales of any make or model. Without the tax subsidies, nobody is looking twice at a $50k EV that also costs double in insurance premiums compared to a real car. Big Auto saw it coming months ago, which is why they've slashed their EV projects, workforce and their production to instead invest in development of next-gen V8s.
Unless Trump transitions into a woman or Vance steals the throne sooner, EVs are dead for the next decade.
It just might, especially if they're Germany, France or Italy and can't do it without sacrificing their own national car brands to replace them with Chinese EV. Ford has canceled BlueOval City and production of its next-generation EV truck. GM has cancelled a dozen other EV related projects and fired over 3,300 EV workers last month, slashing production of all their EV trucks across the Chevy, GMC and Cadillac brands.
It would be a mistake to thing of "government" as autonomous, unilateral organizations. They still need Big Business to survive, and if Wall Street says "No!," then that's the last word.
Right now, Big Auto across the world is saying "Hell, No!"
Just from an informal tally of noting every time I hear the uncanny valley EV hum emanating from a vehicle as it drives passed, the yuppies and boomers near me are definitely drinking the EV kool-aid,
The EV market is soaked at this point. Everybody who's open to them already owns one. It might even shrink in the future as people figure out how badly these things appreciate.
Simple: the government mandates that "in the name of public safety" every EV battery pack needs to be replaced after 10 years. That effectively makes the EV worthless and builds in a guaranteed demand for new ones.
Essentially the same scam they pull with encumbering gasoline engines with emissions/evap inspections and DEF and DPF requirements for diesels.
True, but batteries probably won't even need the government to declare them obsolete. Nobody will be interested in a 10-year old EV battery that only charges to 70-80%. That level of degradation on a smartphone is very annoying. No doubt even worse on a vehicle.
And the thing he doesn't make clear, is that he is using UK gas prices for his comparison. That means that charging an EV over there is more expensive than paying $7+ per gallon for an ICE. That's insane.
MGuy is Australian (it's in the channel name), but he does reference the different currencies in the articles. Either way, no matter where you live, EVs are quickly sinking without all the tax-funded subsidies to prop up the facade.
Welcome to the biggest rug pull/scam in history:

Tax them anyway years down the line? They don't wait that long.
In California, all those "lost" taxes are shoved into your vehicle registration renewal.
They don’t care. It’s all reactionary law fare at best. At worst, what ever makes them the most money at the time. Kickbacks from EV, more taxes, anything to line the coffers so they can be looted.
Just wait till EVs reach critical mass and governments have to somehow make up all that money they currently get from taxes on gasoline.
I don't see it happening. Every major automaker is quickly ditching their EV plans.

That won't stop governments from mandating EVs.

They won’t. They are mobile lithium bombs.

A smartphone also doesn't sit out in the sun or require 220V chargers. Heat is the enemy of all battery tech.

Electricity isn't cheap over in yuro-faggot land.
Correct. However in "fuel" costs, it costs me about a third per km compared to petrol to drive my EV. That's paying ~0,40 USD/kWh.
This country is 16500 miles^2.
Suckers.
