There's a reason I've never even heard of Lunar until this post, whereas an album full of Chrono Trigger music was one of the first things I used Napster for.
Also I'm gonna go on record and say that voice acting has been a net negative for the medium. The jury is still out on fully animated cutscenes, but it isn't looking good.
Metal gear solid and final fantasy 8 has very good cinematography. The dance scene in FF8 is great. However, that’s been replaced by better graphics!!!! Comparing the original Resident Evil 2’s Birkin death scene with the remake illustrates how games suck at making cutscenes despite “looking better”
It's 30 year old Sega vs. Nintendo consolewars stuff.
Lunar came out on the Sega CD with full motion video and CD-quality music 3 years before Chrono Trigger on the SNES. But it was on the Sega CD and sold like something on the Sega CD.
Never played it, but it had a good OST itself (even if you don't know what it's from, but if you're a reasonably old gamer, you've probably encountered the Boat Song [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbZJzh9kX8U] online somewhere*). The problem is because it's CD-quality, it's competing with other music in general, not just chiptunes. And Chrono Trigger is king of its musical niche.
Same old story: something is technically heads and shoulders above what a Nintendo system can do but between market share and Nintendo fans, it gets overshadowed by something on their system. And Lunar fans are extra annoyed because it got wiped from memory.
Edit: The FMV with the song link appears to be from the Saturn remake that was in 1996 and not in the SegaCD version. Lunar: The Silver Star vs. Lunar: Silver Star Story. Mea culpa, but still around the same era.
Turns out the most important thing in video games is gameplay and not production quality
They're both top-down JRPGs from the early 90s. "Gameplay" is markedly similar outside of double/triple techs and ATB (which was optional). Story, music, and art are what made Chrono Trigger great.
And it's fucking strange to suggest Chrono Trigger had low production quality when they were renowned for throwing all the top talent they could get at it.
If what you mean to say is that production quality (and install base, and fantastic pedigree) trump technical capabilities, then yeah. You're right.
Tempted to try it at least. Was also on PS1 I see and there's a remaster but that one seems to suffer from the [le current year] censorship/unneeded changes.
I played through the PS1 version years back. Wouldn't put it up there with Chronotrigger, but it was a fun time. Probably more fun than most if not all "modern audiences" RPGs coming out these days.
What's with the Chrono Trigger hate?
Someone is terminally retarded is what.

But hating on Chrono Trigger is never the way.

I suppose I could phrase it better. Instead of "production quality" I should say "lack of gimmicks like voice acting and musical numbers".
Tempted to try it at least. Was also on PS1 I see and there's a remaster but that one seems to suffer from the [le current year] censorship/unneeded changes.

Oh yea, I don't think a lot of things can top Chrono Trigger but I legitimately never heard of this one before so I take note.
Lunar also had voice acting and fantastic translation.
"Why do you want one of those jewels?! Don't you know they're made from my sh......Oh, what's the use?"
A supposedly-wise dragon, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
There's a reason Working Designs went under, folks.
The West just wasn't ready.
I don't know either. I thought it was so bizarre, it deserves to be here.
