Turns out the most important thing in video games is gameplay and not production quality
They're both top-down JRPGs from the early 90s. "Gameplay" is markedly similar outside of double/triple techs and ATB (which was optional). Story, music, and art are what made Chrono Trigger great.
And it's fucking strange to suggest Chrono Trigger had low production quality when they were renowned for throwing all the top talent they could get at it.
If what you mean to say is that production quality (and install base, and fantastic pedigree) trump technical capabilities, then yeah. You're right.

I suppose I could phrase it better. Instead of "production quality" I should say "lack of gimmicks like voice acting and musical numbers".
