Who in their right mind would ever say such a thing? 🤔 Did he think that was somehow some kind of defence why he wasn't letting them look through his phone because he had just mentioned he was behind the shooting?

There was a local guy on a local TV station right after it happened talking about how the bald guy was a well known local nutjob. Those kinds of guys still exist everywhere, every city has guys who should be institutionalized but are protected instead. Online millennial/zoomer crazy isn't the only kind of crazy even if it's the one guys like us are exposed to most often.
Consider that this is the fellow who yelled "I did it! I did it! Shoot me! Shoot me! I have a gun! Shoot me! I did it!" at the assassination, despite clearly being at the wrong spot and angle, and we can assume his goal is to waste as many police resources as possible.
