tldr; Smart home company went bankrupt. Got bought over, new CEO uploads new mandatory firmware to all their smart home devices to require a cloud connection which requires a subscription of 100+ a year. Previously, there was no such requirement for their smart home devices. People in the smart home community get outraged, Louis offers 5k to anyone who cracks new firmware
Also, I couldn't bear to listen to the video for too long because I swear it's fucking sped up by 1.5x
You have the option of changing the video speed, you know. I speed up most things that I watch on youtube to 1.5x, normally. You could just slow it down to 0.75x.
What the company is doing is inexcusable and Louis is 100% right and such as...
That said...
Anyone who buys 'smart home' devices is a retard. Not a retard who deserves to have to pay $100 a year for what he already paid for, but still...
It's not in any way 'smart' to replace devices that actually work with ones that you can control using buggy spyware that can be shut off at any moment.
Big Tech's malice knows no limit. Only a retard would get a smart home that can't operate on a LAN without an internet connection (I'm not familiar enough with the smart home market to know if those exist, although there's no theoretical reason they shouldn't).
Never even turned that fucker off. Never replaced the dead battery. Doesn't matter, keep that bad boy plugged the fuck in. Never dimmed the screen, never lowered the volume, never stopped being the world's baddest BAMF.
They really aren't? Zigbee devices are one of the cheapest in the smart home scene. And it's not hard to set up your own hub. You can even run it on your own PC, hook a 30 dollar zigbee coordinator up to it and suddenly you have your own localized smart home. Wifi shit is actually more expensive on average
People have pointed out in the comments on the video and in the tek.no article that the CEO is way off when it comes to norwegian law.
Short and simple, not illegal and the company can get fucked.

No, that's just Louis' inner New Yorker shining through.
He actually didn’t used to be this fast. I watched a lot of his old videos back then and it wasn’t like this.
He's gotten exponentially more pissed off over the years. The angrier he gets the faster he talks.
Anyone who doesn't listen to Louis at 2x the speed is an amateur.
Fuck that shit.

You know most smart home devices still work even if they’re not connected right? They still function as dumb switches etc etc.
But you should never ever buy wifi smart home devices if possible

I think the devices were lan capable only but the new ceo pushed out a new firmware that removed that
Wow. I should turn off update on my stuff…
I dont auto update essential stuff anymore. Got fucked a few times doing so when the devs changed things for no fucking reason
I never update anything. Still using a 12 year old Mac book Air. Never updated. Never even power cycle it.

They exist, they are significantly more expensive though.

Mandatory firmwares or updates in 99% of cases should be considered the same as whatever laws deal with computer hacking.
