🤣 I'm guessing one of them is gary oldman (yes, that's his real name), who played the main villian. man tends to play over the top characters like that (see also the sixth sense)
I don't mean this film, did a quick check and couldn't find any referenced original work in the wiki article, but his other work has been discussed here at times being raceswapping.
I recall atheists on IMDB thinking it was stupid to preserve the Bible. As if keeping one of the most influential books ever created is stupid because god doesn’t real. That said, bible should be easy to find.
At least in The Day After Tomorrow the librarian insisted that the one book they don't burn to keep warm was a Gutenberg Bible, not so much for the religious aspect but because it was a piece of history.
"Hey, while you all are arguing over that, there's a whole rack of law books over here we can use"
That's fair i suppose, though I think they handled them well enough.
It came off to me more like he could see, but only very poorly, and he slowly learned to compensate over the thirty years of wandering. it's also implied he was "divinely protected" thoughout most of the film.
there probably were other bibles, but the one he found was the only one anyone in the film knew about. it's not really surprising that there would have been such a reaction after such a cataclysm, though. people already want to blame the bible for every war in history.
not trying to fight by the way, just enjoying the back and forth.
As a person who likes puzzles, seeing Gary Oldman freak out over the Bible that Eli was using made me mad. I could crack that 1:1 English cypher in no time. Then he just has to hire some goons to write it all out for him and bam, he wins.
But now he has the treasure right in his hands! He can dedicate his time to it, or assign goons who are smarter. It just strikes me as so defeatist, as though Braille is some incomprehensible otherworldly communication system.
In the natural world there is no such thing as boundless slaughter, but you and your brother are different. Each step you take is paved with the corpses of your enemies. You are from a world I do not wish to know. I WILL BE WATCHING YOU UNDERSTAND
It was good, just thought a few actors in it overacted a bit. At least that was my impression last time I watched it.

lol, lmao, are you really mixing up The Sixth Sense with The Fifth Element?
😆in my defense, I just woke up.
I think it’s one of the dumbest movies ever made. Both of the big “twists” are laughably stupid.
(spoilers below)
The main character was blind the whole time? Really? That’s what you’re going with?
The ultra rare, virtually extinct book that everyone desperately wants is… The Bible? The most printed and widely disseminated book in human history?
Denzel’s one of the good ones.
Hasn't he been the focus of various raceswaps from original material?
AFAICT, The Book of Eli was an original script.
It seems like a post-apocalyptical world that starts in the middle and leaves out a lot of lore.
But the movie doesn't seem to be based on any source material at all.

Agree completely.
The ending of him remembering the entire Bible by memory is a little far fetched but it makes narrative sense.

He probably isn’t a big puzzle guy living in a post apocalyptic world
But now he has the treasure right in his hands! He can dedicate his time to it, or assign goons who are smarter. It just strikes me as so defeatist, as though Braille is some incomprehensible otherworldly communication system.
He's also dying of a GSW in a post-apocalyptic world without antibiotics or surgeons.
So the Braille Bible MacGuffin is really some forced comeuppance.
His plans were doomed either way with no immediate heir.

Good movie
It sure is.
One of those that I can start watching it wherever it is in the plot on AMC whenever it comes on.
It was 'Denzel Washington' worship-era trash. Mediocre at best.
