LEGAL immigration is championed by most "right wingers" but the leftists cannot see any difference between someone who comes into a country legally and someone who pays human smugglers to get in. They cannot wrap their tiny brains around that essential difference.
If your family came to this country (Canada or USA) before 1960 (just to pick a start date) it is HIGHLY likely they came legally.
My ancestors came to Canada at the express invitation of the Canadian Government. They were German Mennonites from Ukraine and wanted to flee from the Tsar back in the 1890s. They landed in the barrens of Saskatchewan. There had been an extensive advertising campaign inside Russia (which Ukraine was a subject nation of) to encourage people to come over.
