At 40 they will be overcome by regret and wish they were younger or fertile. It is too late.

The authors don't always mean they want this. For example, the author of In Praise of Shadows didn't actually want a house like that, but wanted to make sure the culture was still respected to remember it.

As a reminder Japan has the lowest out of wedlock births (2%). They have roughly the same birth rate as countries like Italy and Spain (1.3), which are about 30-40% out of wedlock births.
And they'll still find a way to blame the low birthrates on hot anime girls.
