The saddest part is: the current next-gen does nothing for gamers. Technological advances are being gobbled up by developers so they can churn out unoptimized slop cheaper.

They sell you shiny new rendering techniques whose only purpose is to hide the shortcomings of their engines. They're barely as good as what we had years ago while being much less efficient.

You're buying that fancy new graphics card so Microsoft & co don't have to spend time optimizing their games.

EA was doing that shit as far back as The Sims 3. It's still impossible to run that game with the EPs installed without a custom designed computer. It doesn't help that it can't run on multicore...

I never had trouble running Sims 3, but it did have the absolute worst load times of any game I've ever played.

Any game post 2020 makes my PlayStation sound like a hairdryer. Anything pre 2020, no problem

I'm not a big AAA game player.

I honestly just get bored as hell watching the new trailers. I couldn't even finish the Witcher 4 trailer. The photorealistic, gritty, bland graphics just ... bore me. It's really amazing how much soul and detail could be packed in low resolution graphics.

Ditto for Dragon Age Veilguard. It just looks so ... tedious and generic and modern day bland.

There's an adventure game speedrunner Youtube channel called One Short Eye. He's done some deep dives into old games. Here's one of his videos on the EGA Sierra game "Colonel's Bequest"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2budy3S3MA

It's a game that was built on a shoestring of a budget compared to games today, with fewer resources and tools than a kid on an ipad. The details and environmental effects are amazing.

I think the lower quality graphics meant that the player's imagination had to do a lot of the heavy lifting and the human imagination is always going to produce a better product than whatever a development team can. So the more you remove the need to lean on the human imagination, the lower the quality of the product becomes. It's all on a curve and there's an optimum amount of graphical fidelity, but as you approach hyper realism you end up on a point of the curve where everything just gets unappealing.

You nailed how i've been feeling for years now. It's funny how a 16 bit game like Final Fantasy 6 can feel so much more epic and impactful than any modern game despite being so technologically limited.

I very strongly agree with your take. As an example, to this day, I find the Classic Warcraft graphics preferable to the latest expansions. Some of the later expansions were great with vey stylized “Warcraft-esque” graphics…like Pandaria. But, once all the models were redone, animations enhanced, textures made higher res, etc., Warcraft lost a lot of its feel.

There’s definitely a sweet spot somewhere in there. Many old 2D games hold up well. Games like BG1/BG2 are still incredibly playable and look good today. Some early 3d games are really impossible to deal with.

The Laura Bow games were also from the era of games where your choices actually matter, but what really made Colonel's Bequest so great (and it's ten 5-1/2 floppy disks for the B-drive, which used to take an hour to install on those old IBMs) is that it took place in real time.

Characters would go about their business while you played and depending on where you were would depend on how things turned out. I can't remember if you could save them, but you had so many different endings you could unlock based on what you did and when you did it. Not many games included that kind of variety, and sadly not even the Laura Bow sequel had that kind of versatility.

The heavily uncompressed character files that suck up way too much space.

CJK games still have and market that they have pretty girls - too bad because of how much money Genshin Impact made their gameplay consist a thin veneer of actual mechanics wrapped by a progression system of farmville-tier "click-to-make-number-bigger" gatcha timegates

Must be a Gen Z artist.

They did excellent facsimiles all of the PS generations.

But somehow fucked up the NES with a top loader that doesn't look anything like the Famicom.

I think it's supposed to just be a generic '80s console largely based on the NES, as the SG-1000 and SMS were both toploaders, as was the Atari 7800.
